You ask for miracles, I give you the FBI.

It is Bruce Willis' best performance but my vote goes for Alan Rickman.

12 Monkeys would be my favorite Willis performance but he is great in Die Hard.

As far as Bruce's performance goes I really think he went the extra mile in Die Hard With A Vengeance.

For me it's Rickman, great villain. Can't pick a favorite because there are so many and I really like them all. I was going to add Dennis Hopper as a great villain also, (Water world, Speed, Super Mario Bros). Also thought Stuart Wilson was a great but vary comical villain in No Escape.

Rickman is simply the best.
Hans Gruber is his masterpiece, but not his only classic villain. Whatever you thought of the film otherwise, there's no denying Rickman was also awesome as Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.

(there's also Snape of course, though some would argue he didnt end up a villain in the end)

Alan Rickman is terrific in this (as in most things), but any number of people could have played that part (though maybe not as well). Even a bad performance would not have killed the movie.

Bruce Willis is the MVP. You begin & end with this character. If you don't buy into him, you don't have a movie. Yeah, he was a wiseass on a quirky hit tv show, but he was not a movie star. And in the eighties there was still a big difference between tv & movies. He took that wiseass persona and added a weariness & vulnerability and became a charismatic everyman, rare qualities in action heroes of the time. This is the characterization he has either coasted along with or fought against for the rest of his career. Just take the Die Hard sequels & see how quickly he became a caricature, but Die Hard 1? That's the stuff.

Bonnie Bedelia is also great in the movie.

The 2 I don't like are Hart Bochner & the "quarterback is toast!" guy.

Second best Die Hard is Die Hard 12:
