Man I haven't seen this since it was first released. I can barely remember it. I'm a huge fan of all 3 leads and completely forgot the highly underrated Damon Wayans was in this.

Damn review scores are pretty low though. Kino is so frustrating. I really hope another label gets the rumored Paramount licensing instead.

Ever since "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" storm I'm always on the fence about Kino. On the one hand I applaud them for releasing obscure, niche, and/or forgotten films but on the other hand their transfers are and can be such a mixed bag (especially with brightness levels).

Kino is mostly an iffy label it feels like. They release a lot of "it gets the job done, but not much else" type of transfers. Which is fine for a title like Celtic Pride to be honest.

Man, the reviewer of this film is harsh. He goes easy on the actors, but downright despises the director and the commentary track on the disc. I do agree that the premise does have serious potential that the film ultimately comes way short of living up to. Still, I don't think the movie is that bad.

It's probably the first time I've noticed on this site that someone beat down a commentary more than the actual feature.

This is a decent comedy if you have fairly low expectations, but it's not a 20 dollar film. It belongs in the 7-10 dollar section a long with Major Payne, Brewster's Millions, Uncle Buck, The Greg Outdoors and other such titles. And its not even as good as those.
It being Kino, I would expect the title to go on sale at least three times before the end of the year and be below $10 by the second one.

What is this rumored Paramount licensing deal you speak of?

I thought I remember reading in the Kino thread not too long ago that there might be some kind of deal struck and Kino will possibly start to release Paramount titles. I could be wrong but I just remember feeling very nervous because it was Kino lol

They've been releasing some Paramount films already but only ones that have never seen a DVD or blu-ray release before. I think Kino would do alright with the Paramount films since they'd be supplied by PM themselves. I think the issue with stuff like Celtic Pride and other Disney owned catalogue titles is that they're treated like sh*t by their own company so there's very little Kino can do once they get their hands on them.

Review doesn't mention it, but the audio on the Kino release is flat mono. Should be stereo, obviously.

The Holy Matrimony/Betsys Wedding Kino Blu-Ray is also in mono, and both of those were recorded in stereo too. Very strange.

This was also an issue on the Buena Vista Mill Creek releases too. The only one I own, Camp Nowhere, suffers from this same problem.

Plus Spaced Invaders, My Science Project and Heartbreak Hotel too.

What's weird though is that some of Mill Creek's Blu-Rays WERE stereo, but the newer Kino Lorber discs are mono. That double feature of Holy Matrimony and Betsy's Wedding is mono in Kino Lorber's release, but both movies were stereo in Mill Creek's Blu-Rays.

I flipped thru some of the other new Kino titles and MY FATHER THE HERO is also mono (whereas the Mill Creek release was stereo). THE SIXTH MAN is also mono. (We should probably start a thread on this

Another problem with CELTIC PRIDE is the transfer is pretty bad, even by Disney catalog standards. Looks like a really old master.

Ughhh. That's too bad. My dvd copy is brutal, I'll still get this despite tempered expectations already. This is a little disappointing.

Most Kino releases are usually 2.0 dual encoded mono even for films that had at least 4 track or basic stereo.

Hmm, wow. Didn't know that many of these releases had the incorrect mixes. Might have to just get the MC for some of those then.

Yeah, it's definitely worth hanging onto the Mill Creek discs that actually DO have the right stereo soundtrack. Like you said before, some of the MC discs are mono too, but there are a handful of them that are stereo whereas the Kino discs are mono.

Really frustrating because none of this should happen...between what Disney sends to the label, and the label's own quality control, you'd think someone would be paying attention.

Mine just shipped an hour ago. Stock must have come in late.

Yep, I just checked and mine shipped also, literally right after I originally posted. Usually Amazon is really good about having the disc arrive on the street date if you have Prime.

Had this happen with the 1492: Conquest of Paradise disc from Kino with Amazon last June. Late shipment to Amazon from Kino, I thought I'd have it by street for sure with Amazon, nope not the case. So ordering from Amazon is pretty reliable (usually get it by street date) but it's not always guaranteed. The fault is with Kino Lorber shipping stock late, not Amazon.
