Lupin III (Part 2 specifically) would be great as an SDBD (once the series is fully out on DVD). With 155 Episodes, 4 or 5 discs to hold the whole series (with higher Bitrate than DVD and using the AVC codec if possible) would be a blessing.

SDBD should be better than dvd usually do to having more space for the highest bitrate they can encode the SD episodes with.

If Discotek switched to BD for their SD-only content, I would happily buy it. It saves them a ton of money, it saves me money and space, and they can use superior H.264 encoding to give the content a better quality on BD that it wouldn't have with MPEG2 and DVD. On the other hand, this may end up being where they get a bunch of already-encoded low-quality DVD master files from the content owners and are forced to throw those on BD. I suppose it's a win-win either way.

I’d like to vote SDBD, but I’ve heard they have several problems playing back on PS3s and PS4s (like Fist of the North Star), which are my only means of playing them :/

Is this true? If so I'd be against it because I too mainly watch on my PS4

What do you guys on BR.com think would be a good price point (it's 3500 minutes long, but it's in SD)?
Currently $54.49 on Amazon. 152 episodes, so that works out to roughly $0.36 per episode. Seems like a very fair price to me

Just straight BD, if there is no Japanese HD master, don't bother. I'm not spending a single dollar on Standard Definition Blu Ray, as stupid as that sounds/is, like Semi-Manual Automatic.

"I just transferred all my DVD to BD, isn't it awesome?"

No, it's not.

I want to get kicked in the face every time someone wants to matte 4:3 into 16:9 to "fill up the screen"

(Flashbacks of working at Suncoast, where purchasing something in widescreen meant "less picture." KMN.)

And if they can't be bothered to fix the subtitles in these bastard chimera discs, all the more reason not to embrace.

Nope.

Haaaa! That brings back memories. When I worked there I had the widescreen vs. pan and scan explanations on a daily basis. Glad somebody else felt my pain.

Nope.
SD on BD should give better picture then SD on DVD, as compression is better on Blu-ray. Transferring DVD SD to Blu-ray will not improve picture, since the DVD compression comes with the transfer. Ideally SD on BD will come from the best source available, not a DVD.

I don't see why there would be any cropping of 4:3 on a hypothetical SDBD release, since Discotek doesn't do that. They present it in its original aspect provided.

Really? Arcadia of My Youth. Not SDBD but 4:3 to 16:9.

I suspect they were stuck with what Japan gave them in that case. If they had gotten an HD version of the 4:3 version, they probably would have found a way to bundle that in too.

DVD as SD content on Blu-ray Disc wouldn’t upscale the same way as SD content on DVD format. Unless they do in house upscaling to HD like Funimation has done on certain releases.

Amazon is just pricematching Best Buy's price on Cowboy Bebop.

As far as SD-BD goes, i'm for it if it's the only possible way to get a series or movie on Blu-ray but no Facebook account.

Then it would no longer be an SDBD!

I'm all for SD on BD. Just the fact that they'll be in BD cases and take up less room is a win to me. I wonder if they will go back and release previous versions on BD now such as the first two Lupin II releases or just continue partially released series on DVD.
