Great news! I figured this was a title either Arrow or Scream Factory would eventually release, so I'm glad it's Arrow. I actually watched Hitch-Hike (starring David Hess in a similar role) last night and was going to revisit this one this week. I guess I'll hold out to get this version first!

As I recall, the MGM Blu was perfectly fine, with a good selection of bonus features.
If all that is carried over, along with some new features, and the price is right, I'll probably get it. As for multiple cuts, what's on the MGM? I was under the impression the film was finally restored on DVD and Blu, after a long spotty history of cuts. |

There is a longer version which has never been been released on home video. When it came to reconstructing the film, Wes Craven deliberately held some of the footage back. He restored the beginning of the disembowelment, but left the rest on the cutting room floor, and there's also additional scenes with the cops which weren't included. |

The new Arrow cover to TLHOTL has some of the best art for a '70's horror flick that I've ever seen. Well-done.
This is a definitely a disturbing & at times horrific film. The way I see it, the movie was obviously filmed in an intentional "documentary style", in that it isn't supposed to remind you of an actual movie, but more like news footage that you would see on TV from that time period- and I mean that as a compliment. What separates this movie from other horror flicks (especially many of Wes Craven's later horror films) is the lack of a supernatural element - which, to me, made this all the more disturbing. I.e., you can easily see the events of the film actually occurring. Violent crime is something that concerns everyone - and I think this movie is especially effective in depicting this - especially given that it's affecting those who live in a supposedly "nice" area. The distinction between the "bad" urban city (as seen in the beginning of the film, when the two girls meet the criminals) & the "nice" suburbs is extremely pronounced here. On a lighter note, back when I saw the LHOTL DVD years ago, one of the special features was a documentary in which the main actors/actresses were interviewed years later about the film; one of the actors (possibly D. Hess) mentioned that after this film came out in NYC, there were posters all over the subway(s) - and, when people recognized him when he was out in public, they were so frightened because of what his character did in the movie that they would run away from him in fear! Very funny, if true ![]() |

They should bundle this with the previously unpublished Night of Vengeance screenplay. There were excerpts in the booklet for the 2003 Anchor Bay DVD.

Isn't that the script with full blown unsimulated sex scenes? The movie was originally intended to be a super transgressive pornographic film (hence why Fred Lincoln and Lucy Grantham were cast in the first place), but really early on, everyone realized having pornographic sex scenes were stupid for such an otherwise powerful screenplay.

I'm a huge fan of this movie and it's nice to see the original title font used compared to what MGM went with on their release. That alone(and the better artwork) is a big deal for myself in this case, and naturally I'd hope for as much new extras as possible, and or multiple versions of the film since it has such a drastic censorship and release history.

This is one of the scariest movies ever made. It’s very realistic and that’s what makes it so creepy. Definitely a day one purchase . RIP Wes Craven
