lol if they are smart they know what they need to do and not sit on the sidelines anymore ... let the power spenders of blu-ray put them back in the game

I doubt Paramount would make $150 million in Blu-ray sales during 2008. Trust me when I say they wont be suffering.

I don't know if I am 100% correct but they did not recieve 150 million in cash. A lot of that was sales and promotional activities (such as the Shrek 3 commercials advertising HD-DVD) given to them by Toshiba.

I don't know if they will lose money if they have to stay exclusive thru 2008, but they will not make as much as they had planned.

well, i guess U're right on short terms... however, it is not a good marketing to become a company with name ''the only one that has no high-def movies''...

I don't see why Universal wouldn't announce a switch to neutral or blu at CES, if not now, what better time? Even if they couldn't start producing right away, they could still announce it's coming.

I'm sure Paramount knows their is no more money coming once this contract is up, maybe they can negociate to go back to neutral.

Done, and done. Actually, we've had a Universal logo at the ready for quite some time now, and I added a Weinstein pic just in case.

it wasn't 150 million straight cash. it was 150 million in cash and promotional considerations. and paramount only got 100 million, dreamworks got the other 50 million.

they probably would come pretty close to breaking even, but that won't make up for the fact that they are not going to get anytype of breaks (like they probably were) in terms of blu-ray licensing fees and such and they have also really hurt their public perception as well as looking like complete idiots.

btw, they are supposeldy really, really mad about wb.

Talking Great reasoning, but you forgot one!

im going to list of some reasons why i think Universal is going blu really soon.

1. Penton has hinted at it
2. In HD DVDs darkest hour, Universal has "no comment" about future support.
3. They have been seen checking out blu-ray plants
4. While I believe that PR sent out yesterday was about a week old. Graffeo did not reaffirm support or comment on the situation. Either way Universal has yet to say they are still supporting HD DVD and we have heard nothing out of Graffeo regarding the situation which is odd, given he is HD DVD's biggest PR spinner.
5. Surely Universal was going to announce some titles and give some release dates at the conference yesterday. I know it was cancelled, but Universal should have sent out a PR stating what they plan on bringing to HD DVD by now. Fox did it immeidately after the Paramount switc, so the fact that Universal hasn't done it in the 72 hours since the WB is not right.
6. They have openly admitted GE has been putting pressure on them to support blu-ray.
7. Rumors ran wild at Universal corporate offices when a stack of moving boxes were dropped off at Ken Graffeo's office after maintenance workers were seen removing the nameplate from his door.

(kidding, wish it were true)

i actually really did forget one

#7 - MS has very close ties with NBC/Universal, it was probably this reltaionship which kept Universal Pictures HD DVD exclusive for so long,
Microsoft's recent actions in which they appear no longer to be supporting HD DVD could have an big impact in Universals HD stance.

That one's easy: they'd sell more copies of their movies on Blu, ergo they'd make more money by supporting Blu exclusively.

It was VERY telling that the HD DVD camp cancelled their press conference and events, Microsoft made ZERO mention of HD DVD (even though it has been rumored that originally 30% of their speech was to have been about it) during their presentation, and Universal had "no comment" regarding HD DVD support after the Warner and New Line announcement.

Poor little red ants...

What about reason #8? Universal is dying to cash in on all those Speilberg movies which will only come out on Blu.
