I'll definitely buy these two cool movies on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray ONLY if they'll get remixed in Dolby Atmos and/or DTS:X.

Unless GDT says "no, absolutely not," I would assume that Sony will remix the first one in Dolby Atmos. They've done it for Groundhog Day and A Few Good Men, so I'm sure they would for an action fantasy.

Unfortunately, Universal would be using DTS: X rather than Atmos if they chose to remix the second film.

I actually liked DTS:X every bit as much as Dolby Atmos but you are correct on this one though, it seems Universal prefers DTS:X over Atmos, after all they converted Atomic Blonde from Atmos to DTS:X on Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray releases. I'm not too surprised though, Universal in general has always been a DTS supporter since Jurassic Park.

If you go past a 7.1.4 immersive system, DTS: X falls short. Dolby Atmos literally goes beyond 11. Spinal Tap would have been proud. Atmos on disc can render out to 24.1.10.

Never picked them up and always been a borderline fan at best but listening to two fans talk about the films on a podcast this weekend have me down to give them another chance especially if theyre coming in 4k.

Even though I like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X equally I do have to agree with you on this one, DTS needs to increase the limit on DTS:X a little bit, at least to 9.1.4 or 11.1.4 channels, that might help them out a bit. Otherwise it might become a niche at best format if they don't resolve that flaw (remember back in the late 2000s and early-to-mid 2010s that Blu-rays were more likely to get DTS-HD Master Audio than Dolby TrueHD?)

There have been some rumblings that to go past 7.1.4 with DTS: X, you have to use Neural: X upmixing. That's how Front Wides are derived with DTS: X tracks on receivers and pre-amps that can actually support Front Wides.

The rumor being was that DTS wasn't able to get object rendering/panning to work properly. I'm not sure if DTS will ever fix this or not as they were bought out.

These are very high on my wish list. I really hope they go through with them. Love Hellboy 2.

Exactly what's even the point of not wanting a 4K version to exist? Some people just wanna ruin the joy of others.

On a sidenote I despise how it says '2K' in that poll. I hate this recent snotty trend of people saying 2K when they are really talking about 1080p.

Really concerned about properly representing that ~6% spatial resolution difference?

Not concerned at all I just don't see the point really. We've been saying 720p and 1080p for 15 years and now all of a sudden a bunch of people have started referring to 1080p as 2K instead.

I watched Hellboy on BD a couple of years ago and was surrpised at just how good it looks - we're talking 11 years old now? Compared to nearly everything else mastered at that time, it destroys it. Really ahead of its time. On UHD BD this will be a sight to be seen.

Sony scanned it at 4K for the 2K finish so I'm not surprised it holds up as well as it does, and Sony had this compression malarkey down pat too. Sony insist on a neg cut for their DI stuff that's shot on film so rebuilding this in 4K won't be quite so awkward. Heck, if the 4K scans were archived and they captured enough dynamic range at source (10-bit minimum) then they could re-use those in a pinch. As for Universal and Hellboy 2, **** knows.

But is GDT referring to 4K generally as in "4K release" or an actual "4K rebuild"? I'm guessing the former. If Sony and Uni were to do these on UHD they'll be cash-ins for the reboot so I doubt we'll get a lot of heavy lifting. Likely just a regrade of the existing 2K DIs, I hope Hellboy doesn't come out looking like Criterion's Pan's Labyrinth though.

Love both of them. There's quite a few nice looking catalog BD's I've told myself I probably wont bother upgrading to UHD when/if they surface - these two are not on that list...count me in!

I would be surprised if Sony didn't remix the first Hellboy into Atmos. Again, they'd probably not touch it only if the director said not to.
