I have a 16:9 tv and have a dark wall behind it and low light makes the issue easier to live with.
I am enjoying those films right now........no new t.v. needed......

@ the OP - don't you understand black bars! its the directors intent, educate!!! how dare you want to use a 16:9 movie. Eventhough that may be the directors intent... you must use a movie with black bars you must, only that ratio is ok, your not cool if you don't use black bars
you ARE the OP

Picture is neither loose nor tight.

I enjoy 2.40 material on my 16x9 (1.78) TV just fine, in any lighting.
I don't lose any enjoyment if there are bars on the screen or not.

Actually 1:78 fills the entire screen and 1:85 has tiny black bars that aren't really that noticeable. Your hdtv may have it set to have some minor zoom to remove any black bars with 1:85 ratio.

OP: If you're insistent on only using 1.78:1 Blus for this purpose, Up would be an excellent demo disc.

Hellboy, Spider-man, Mad Men, Up, Monsters, Inc....

To the other posters: black bars on top of the movie are NOT what the director intended you to see, he inteded you to see his movie in the aspect ratio he chose to film his movie. The black bars NEED to be there in order to respect that original aspect ratio.

I've always said that the new "FULLSCREEN" should be 16X9, which could be chopped or open matte, but we need to be given the option. I do zoom movies when I'm watching them on a 32" TV, but when I watch them on the 40" I don't do it.

That is such a silly statement! Instead of thinking of them as "bars" why don't you just think of it as dead space, because that is what it really is? ...has nothing to do with the director!

TO HELL WITH WHAT THE DIRECTOR WANTS ME TO SEE!
I think we should have that option on the disc, and let the purists have the black bars!
It's hard to believe people like this actually exist, yet here is the proof

That's my whole point, you nailed it! It has to be there in order to comply with the director's choice of aspect ratio.

not really, I have found that many blu-ray.com members are tech geeks first, movie fans second. they want to see how hard a movie rocks their sub, instead of watching a carefully crafted scene full of subtle wonders.

this is not the case for all of us, but the amount of Transformer copies in the collections of members supports my claim

I'm sure some of the Transformer owners overlap into both categories so don't take it personally

A couple of IMAX features are worth checking out, though they're typically awful films. Grand Canyon Adventure looks really good. The Alps also.

These threads never cease to amaze me. It reminds me of what Dave Barry said....."there is a fine line between hobby and mental illness."
