Played this trailer twice today already. This looks badass. Consider me there opening night.
Side note, did anyone got an 90's sci-fi action vibe from this? Even the poster looks kind of retro. |

Saw Upgrade last night, early screening at my local Alamo Drafthouse & man was it really ****ing good! A lot of cool action, gore, & surprisingly the story was clutch! Also there were some
[Show spoiler] I didn't see coming that through me for a loop. Leigh Whannell was there, he is touring the film for the next few weeks but he did a short Q&A after the film ended. He was also kind of enough to talk with everyone outside the theater about the movie and the Wife & I got to ask him a bunch of stuff dude was super chill and fun to chat with, really fun night!

This looks like it could be a fun ride.
I really disliked Green in Prometheus (not entirely his fault, just an unlikable character altogether), but he was excellent in The Invitation. |

I'll have to check out "The Invitation" I've heard of it for a while now but haven't gotten around to watching it, might end up doing that this week. Last edited by hYPE; 05-08-2018 at 10:24 PM. |

Watched this Thursday night (5/10) with Leigh Whannell in attendance at an Alamo Drafthouse as well. While I can't say that I personally liked it (the ending just doesn't align with my personal tastes:
[Show spoiler] , I do recommend watching it. It is very well made, especially considering the low budget, and this take on the futuristic AI concept was interesting to watch develop even if the ending leads to something that is just not very original anymore. There were a couple of scenes that did not "gel" well with the film. One was a car-chase scene that felt a bit amateurish (although I suspect this was a limitation of the budget, so I'm not faulting it for it). The other one was a scene with dialogue that seemed to be trying to say something important but felt very irrelevant and out of place with the film. It did not add anything to the themes, characters, nor the story so it kind of made me a bit confused for a bit. Other than in those two moments, the movie shines as a good, low budget, futuristic sci-fi/thriller. It has its moments of dark humor and some of the camera work is very clever. Logan Marshall-Green carries the film well and does a really good job as a man seeking revenge for his wife's death, and his reactions and interactions with the AI in his brain make it believable and fun to watch. B+ for me.It was nice to be there in the Q&A with Leigh Whannell. It was a fun interview (he talked about how crazy the stunt-coordinator is, who incidentally, also worked in the original Mad-Max), and he was very honest about the film and his creative process of coming up with stories. Even though he started out as a screenwriter (Saw, Insidious) I think he can do great as a director with a bit more experience and a bigger budget. Definitely a filmmaker to look out for. |
