Just watched it. Remembered liking the dark freaky story but was totally unprepared for the breathtaking cinematography. The 30m Ferrara film with Taylor and Walken is wonderful, not your cookie cutter extra. The whole thing gets an A+ from me.

just finished watching the Blu-ray and it was great. It's going on my Top-10 Blu-ray of the year list.

Interesting, dense little film (way more mature than the punked out, trashy, snot nosed but fun as hell Driller Killer, which was the last horror centric Abel Ferrara movie I watched), but I have company over and made the unfortunate (or absolutely amazing, depending on what angle you look at this) decision to show Xtro before popping this in, so I was a little too distracted to really pay much attention.
I'll revisit this in a more intimate, less chaotic setting. That said, the PQ is typical top of the line Arrow Video magic and the acting is great across the board (especially Lilli Taylor's freakout and that great Christopher Walken detour). Last edited by GasmaskAvenger; 06-27-2018 at 05:43 AM. |

I am trying to not spend any extra money this summer because I have a huge foreign trip coming up, but I had to blind-buy this. Arrow Video, Ferrara, Lilly Taylor, Walken, vampires...I need this in my life.

Same here - at least from the blind aspect. Have been trying to save for the Criterion sale (as well as a few other of life's necessities) but this looks too good.

I'll be curious to hear what blind-buyers think of it. There was once a day when I couldn't wait to see it because it sounded practically perfect and made for me... and when I finally saw it, I absolutely DESPISED it. Even now there are few movies that I hate more than this one!

I saw The Addiction when it was first released and liked it okay. Haven't seen it again until just now.
Loved it! This is an infinitely more sophisticated horror film than I remembered. It reminds me of the best of Val Lewton & Jacques Tourneur, only with a cruel and savage edge. It just might be a modern vampire classic. Stunning transfer. The photography is a rich canvas of shadow, contouring and depth. This is how a horror film should be lit. Don't hesitate. Buy It Now. The philosophical dialogue gets a bit much at times, especially if you are familiar with the ideas being referenced, but the film is definitely underrated.
I really want to hear the commentary, but that Stevens guy is a real fanboy in the guise of a critic. I read his book about Ferrara years ago, and he thinks practically every film he has made since King of New York is a masterpiece. |

Finally picked this up today after wanting it for months. A great release, gorgeous transfer, and solid interviews, especially from Lili Taylor. I adore that woman as both a performer and person.
I saw this movie around four years ago while I was coincidentally a graduate student in New York City myself. I agree that it is a bit too talky at times and the philosophy name-drops almost (but not quite) become too heavy-handed at times. Still, I think it's a beautiful movie, gorgeously shot and acted. In many ways I felt it genuinely captured the isolation bubble that is academia, though that element strikes me as peripheral to Ferrara's larger themes of guilt, sin, etc. It's not a perfect film and feels thematically scattered, but it's still damn good as far as I'm concerned, and atmospheric as hell. |

Went to go watch this on Prime the other night as I've been keen to check out more Ferrara, but instead was given yet another healthy reminder why I prefer physical in the first place;
