I mean don't get me wrong, it's great to see an older Peter Weller and Michael Keaton still working in the genres that made them famous when they were in their early 30's, but it's sorta hard to let go of what made you love these guys in the first place now. The thug Starfleet bit? I liked it better in The Undiscovered Country. "Let The Klingons Die!", now that was gangsta! |

It was a close tie between Khan and First Contact for me, but I ended up voting for Khan since FC actually references it in a way (if Khan is Moby Dick from the POV of Ahab, then FC is basically Moby Dick from the POV of the narrator).
I really view II-III-IV as one movie and usually watch them in sequence or the next day, so a vote for Khan is sort of a vote for all of them. The only other classic movies I really bother to watch are Generations and the DC of TMP; the rest are boring. I actually consider All Good Things to be a better movie than Insurrection or Nemesis. It, the Farpoint sampler and the Khan DC blu-ray are the only classic Trek BDs I have. As for the new movies, the first is good and the second is blegh. I haven't watched the third yet. |

[Show spoiler] . But to me while they are welcome in keeping Trek alive, they tend to get too close to parody, with the exception of Chris Pine, who to me is trying too hard not to be Shatner and seems to be missing the point.Hashtag #notmykirk ![]() |

There's a lot that I like about all three 'phases' to the Star Trek Cinematic Universe, and yes: while II and VI would usually top my leaderboard (because they really are fantastic films, whaddayagonnado

I can't pick just one, but my fave TOS film is a tie between The Voyage Home and The Undiscovered Country. Similarly, I like all the TNG films, though I admit Nemesis is the worst of them. I only saw the first of the reboot series, and didn't care for it at all.

a lot of it is nostalgia, but Star Trek II has such great memories for me that it's easily my favorite.... though several other films in the series are just as good.

Would use to say First Contact but while I still love that movie, Undiscovered Country gets my vote. It's exciting as hell and has a wonderful villain in the form of General Chang.

Only Star Trek The Motion Picture is proper Star Trek! After that, SF plots took a back seat and the series went down the route of simple action adventure with added laser beams. The one other movie where they held back from the phaser battles and fist fights, The Voyage Home, was in essence a remake of TMP anyway (mysterious alien probe threatens Earth, and is eventually mollified by receiving the correct response signal) with comedy instead of philosophy.
That's not to say I don't like the franchise, I've seen all of the original cast movies many times and the others at least a few times each (except Nemesis), but the first one is in a class above all the rest. It's not just a good Trek movie, it's a good SF movie. Could that honestly be said of any other Star Trek movie? |

First Contact and nothing is even close.
It's just that the Next Generation is richer and more complex. |

I just watched the first three movies for the first time. I personally slightly preferred The Motion Picture over Wrath of Khan. Felt more cinematic and seemed like Wise got some major influence from 2001. The others felt a bit more TV movie in comparison. The visuals of the Vger ship/station were especially impressive. And after years and years of hearing hype about II being the best movie, while I still really liked it, I just wasn’t as impressed with Khan as a villain as much as I’d heard. Search for Spock kind of bored me a bit. Not sure when I’ll get to the other three.
