This being an Annapurna movie doesnt bode well for its box office prospects.

Did Laika's deal with Focus Features expire or something?

I have faith in Laika, but the humor / writing seems a lot more low brow for them compared to their existing work, and I kind of hate the design of Bigfoot in the movie. I feel like they're trying to pander more to the mainstream with this, which I guess isn't a bad thing if it does help them gain a bigger audience. I'll see it regardless, but I'm not really sold on the film.

the family nearest me while watching 'Dumbo' yesterday weren't in the slightest enamored with the trailer - and made a really negative comment in that they'd be "missing" this in the theater. I tend to agree, Laika for this movie seems heavily leaning to OTT humor unlike past movies - likewise I'll still be seeing this, but I don't have high hopes.

In terms of the 3D, for movies shot in stop motion, I have no idea why the layering effect is so mild compared to cel or computer animation.

It’s still impeccable how smooth their animation is.

Every time I see the trailer I keep forgetting that it's Zoe Saldana playing the female lead. I honestly believe they were aiming to get Salma Hayek for the role. That's all I see and hear when I look at the character.

Laika Studio offers very impressive animation, but their stereo 3D department is not doing 3D any benefits, as their films are usually very mild to mild 3D most times, with few exceptions. It's like watching a 2D movie with 3D glasses, and largely defeats the whole point of three dimensions. They need to amp up the 3D in their films to NWave Studio quality strong 3D. Or Dreamworks' Madagascar 3's strong 3D at least.

On topic, this movie looks interesting for the story. I'm interested to see how it does in theaters. It's a risk, but their films usually step out of the norm.

A quite literally cartoonishly awful protagonist, a plot that makes no sense, lowbrow humor, and terrible gender dynamics add up to an unpleasant retro mess

Ouch

It’s going to be tough to top Kubo.

I’ll see this because it’s Laika and I have A List. However, I’d be fine without seeing it too. I do hope it does well though and Laika will be able to continue making films. After seeing Kubo, I want nothing more than for Laika to do some sort of science fiction type film. I think that would just be amazing.

Even if this is only as good as The Boxtrolls (the "weakest" Laika film), it will still be terrific family entertainment.

Just give them the Oscar please! They need this for all the hard work they put into each film for the past decade. They finally gave an award to a non-Disney film this year after 7 years and I hope that continues. I have no hope for Toy Story 4 or Frozen 2. Both completely unnecessary and unappealing. What the hell does Laika need to do?

Movies are never made because they are necessary.
