Ok guys good news!!

Eureka just contacted me about the original Cantonese mono from the Japanese
laserdisc of Police Story 2 I will be talking with them on Monday

Unlikely. Didn't shout release them on Region A locked discs for the US few years ago? Of course that's OOP now, but I imagine the licensor would apply the same restrictions to maximize their profits.

It might be locked as there is mention of Police Story movie on the Janus website. So, speculation is that Criterion might release it at some point in the future.

Yea but Shout region lock all their releases as far as I know.

I tried to Google this & came up with nothing searching their site directly also gave me nothing. Either way it wont matter too much since ill have a new region free player by then, was just curious

Not managed to see the video yet (my phone internet connection is rubbish) I’ll be getting this no matter what but are we expecting a yellow tinted push with these given the track history with the company handling the restorations?

I wonder why they’re bothering including the butchered US version, maybe just a curio? These versions are generally excruciatingly bad (I seem to remember one of Chan’s films having Kung Fu Fighting playing over the credits? Horrible. Edit - yep, it was PS3).

I enjoy these inclusions for completest purposes, but I'm wondering if they reconstructed it using the 4K master (but they would need a source for the insert shot of Selena/Brigitte Lin starting the tape recorder before she pretends to flirt with Ka Kui/Jackie), or if they just have a 30+ year old pan and scan betacam master.

Btw, many people don't know that there's a rare version of the Cantonese dub that not only fits this shorter cut, but also uses Kevin Bassinson's music

And yeah, the less said about the Tom Jones version of Kung Fu Fighting in Supercop, the better... the original Carl Douglas theme is a guilty pleasure, but the Tom Jones version is a trainwreck by itself AND woefully shoehorned into the film. Actually, "shoehorned" sums up the bulk of the US soundtrack to Supercop. Although I don't mind Devo's "Supercop" too much... at least it's relatively related?

As long as Warner Brother has almost full worldwide rights (aside from Dimenson/Miramax's claim here in the US and the UK), we're screwed on that one. The only hope would be a multi studio collaborative effort, but it would be a tough one.

That was Dimension's doing in 1996.

To be fair many of the original export cuts were carefully done (and were in some cases (i.e. Police Story 2) an improvement).

Me too. I think I actually saw the sequel before the original, but still remember seeing the brief recap at the start and thinking, “bleedin’ heck, what have I just seen?!”. I think it was taped off the tv when Channel 4 had a late night season of these films way back probably in the early to mid 90s.
Needless to say, gobbled up pretty much anything Chan related ever since (aside from his run-of-the-mill recent offerings).

I think it's pretty obvious that Eureka are dealing with Medusa Entertainment(?), who originally supplied these same HK movies to Hong Kong Legends and later Cine Asia. Considering Drunken Master and Iron Monkey were also released by HKL, I think it's best to check that catalogue to see what else Eureka can get their hands on. I personally would love a Naked Killer blu-ray.

Fair point. On that note, the hard to find New Line Cinema cut of PS2 was actually based on the international cut, and even made it to widescreen laserdisc.

EDIT: Little bit of trivia, Jackie's voice actor in the New Line versions of PS1 and PS2 was Ping Wu, most recognizable as the Chinese delivery guy Ping on a few episodes of Seinfeld. He also dubbed Jackson Lou's voice in the New Line version of First Strike.
