X-Men: First Class is an example of a mainstream prequel that worked IMO

Prequels can be good and sometimes useful. I was like
The origin story’s better then the others sometimes. Like I’ve always wanted to know what Han did before he hooked up with Luke. Solo could have been a good movie but Disney doesn’t care about the material. All they care about is making back that $4 billion the spent on Star Wars. If you get people involved that do care about the material then we would have gotten a lot better movie. |

The film which popularised - maybe even invented - the word prequel, Butch and Sundance The Early Days, is surprisingly enjoyable. And Paul Schrader's Exorcist prequel Dominion is an interesting near-miss. It's debatable whether it's a prequel or not, but Young Sherlock Holmes is also surprisingly good.

Not sure if Red Dragon counts because the book came out before The Silence of the Lambs. So it didn't have those limitations that most prequels have.

There are plenty of prequels that are pretty good. People like to tie themselves into knots to call them something else. I don't get it. It's the same deal with remakes. "oh, it's not a prequel, it's a REBOOT/REIMAGINING that might lead up to something resembling the original movie!!!!" (planet of the apes) ETC.
The new Planet of the Apes movies are great. I think the second one is the best mainstream blockbuster this side of The Dark Knight. For other modern big-budgeters, X-Men First Class is pretty good. I liked Rogue One alright. Temple of Doom is fun (though there's no reason at all it had to be a prequel that I can remember). There's just this distinction - if the prequel is close enough to the movie it's a prequel to, there are likely 0 stakes and it just functions as fan-fulfillment (ie, Solo) that at best might be fun and at worst might have things like the explanation for Han Solo's name that throw stupid wrenches into the works and actively make the later movies dumber if you try to think about it. Godfather II is half a prequel! |

Well, yeah. The new Apes movies aren't actually prequels to the originals. There's a different origin for the apes, and there's no nuclear war as implied in the originals. A reboot/reimagining that leads up to something resembling the original movie pretty much covers it.
