I'm finding these to be less compelling reasons to bother with 4K to be completely honest. The uptick in resolution is mainly apparent on older content shot on film, something that sadly remains in the minority of titles chosen for 4K treatment. As for an extended range of colors, well, many films today are shot digitally with drab colors (Annihilation) or monochromatic (Dunkirk). Again, this is something that may benefit older shot-on-film titles for the most part. If all you watch are Marvel movies well, then, you're in Heaven. I've already invested in 4K and I don't regret it but I'm equally happy with Blu-ray (if not more).

I notice you didn't actually reference dynamic range at all so I'm guessing you're not a fan? The extension of the highlight information on Annihilation destroys the Blu-ray, but then the Blu-ray retains more shadow detail.

I happen to think its somewhat gimmicky and a way for companies to make a buck off the same movie we have all bought multiple times already (DVD/Bluray). Now if the movie was shot in 4K (or higher i.e. The Martian (6K) among many many others) I could definitely understand wanting to have it in this format. As we all experienced with the advent of DVD and then Blu-ray we found that some companies did a great job with their transfers/scans and others did not. This will obviously also be part of the 4K generation for releases too. I will definitely be watching the release reviews of these before I go buy a film for a 3rd time! LOL Not trying to argue with anyone. Just trying to understand...

and after over 35 years of collecting movies... has it ever been any different? Right now I'm fighting myself not to upgrade perfectly good Scream Factory Collector's Edition blu rays with snazzy new steelbooks...

this is how an industry works-- people need to keep buying things over and over again to keep that revenue coming (look at TV's and cell phones-- constantly "improving" to make you want to buy again and again.....)

The best way to understand 4k is to watch a movie in 4k, then compare it to the blu ray.

Movies can look and sound better on UHD.

Yeah... OP knows enough about UHD to know people want releases in 4K, that some movies are filmed at higher resolution potential than others etc, but somehow doesn't know enough about UHD to understand the appeal.

I'm thinking it's yet another weekly stealth promotion thread where random account feigns confusion, disregards all the detailed replies they get explaining the format and how movies are shot, then another random account comes in to finally alleviate the confusion with a link to REEEEE-or-fayk dot gom. wow thank you for the info, I will be sure to bookmark this incredibly useful site my fellow home video forum user.

No, this isn't true. You aren't seeking info and understanding.

What you want is for everyone to tell you that what you believe is exactly right. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Don't buy things that you don't understand or otherwise care about. You may as well troll around audiophile sites wonder why someone spends over $3,000 for power line conditioning or $10,000 for a SACD/DAC front end.

This thread with the false pretense title... I think jh901 hit it on the nose. I don't think he really want to understand, he just wants validation. Justification maybe to avoid re-buying movies or save money or something-er-other.

i.e The tired stock standard nonsense. Calling it stupidity because it just seems willfully ignorant beyond consideration otherwise.

Thread could do with sleeping with the fishes. But I guess it's good for a laugh

Amazon dropped off M:I 1 on porch, snapped a photo, and trolled me with it knowing I'm stuck at work. Never seen it. Loved 4 and 5 though. Gonna screen the $^%# out of it this evening.

Fury Road is an amazing disc, it does not deserve to be listed with T2 or 3:10 to Yuma at all.

Really? Everything I've read and the screencaps I've seen make it seem that the colors were off, especially around flames and such.

I've actually got Fury Road on my wishlist, and I'll probably cave on that one. If for no other reason than the movie is one of my favorites. Was never sure if the upgrade would be worth it though--glad to hear some praise for it.

I read mixed things about that disc. Seems like half are happy with the upgrade, half aren't.

Should have read the site's review--4/5 isn't a bad score at all.

Dude, nothing's as bad as T2. T2 is in a class all by itself.
