Yeah, I don't know what it is about Sullivan that they've released such lousy transfers in the past. The original DVD release of The Road to Avonlea series was just horrendous. The new transfers, while still only on DVD in standard definition, look fantastic compared to the old.

Just slightly off-topic here, but---as I noted before, just about ALL of Sullivan's original DVD releases were simply terrible. Here's an example from "The Road to Avonlea"---first photo shows the initial DVD release, the second shows the new (reframed) DVD scan. The series was shot on 35 mm (as compared to the first two Anne films, which I believe were shot in 16 mm)----so just think how good it could look if only it were to be released on blu-ray!

A few moments ago I was browsing the Sullivan website, which was an exercise in complete frustration. There are SO MANY multiple releases of all the Anne material on DVD, with no clear explanations of what the differences are between one version and another.
I'm more than a little annoyed that there seems to be no way to obtain blu-ray versions of films 2, 3, or 4 independently. They are only available on that outrageously overpriced four-film set, with a selling point of $180. And yeah, I'm just not going to pay that when all I want is film 2 on blu-ray (since I've already purchased the first film on blu). I can only assume that Sullivan is doing this to unload copies of films 3 and 4, which have not been nearly as popular as the first two. |

The real problem with films 3 and 4 are that Sullivan was barred from using any of the plots from the series of books, and so had to write the stories himself---and he did it very badly indeed. Heck, he even seemed to have some trouble writing the first two films---you may recall that a few scenes from "Little Women" were copied almost verbatim in those films. The situation really was a mess. After film 2, Sullivan and the Maud Montgomery estate had a falling out over how the profits for the first two films were distributed. Their relationship was so acrimonious by that point that the estate refused to sell Sullivan the rights to any more of the Anne books. Now, at that time the first book had gone out of copyright, so Sullivan could use the CHARACTERS from that book in an original story of his own, but he could not use the PLOTS of the additional books in the series, which were still under copyright. So that's how we ended up with films 3 and 4, with familiar characters but all new plots. All these years later, the entire series of books is now in the public domain---the Montgomery family has no control over what is filmed. And this is why the "Anne with an E" Netflix series exists, which plays pretty fast and loose with both characters and plots from the books. Anyone at all can take the original source material and do whatever they want with it now. |

A movies only complete collection is now available, no extra stuff or giant box. Haven’t gotten it (I really only want the first two) but probably will if I can find a good price. Haven’t seen it on other sites though

Figures they finally release the sequels on Blu-Ray after I broke down and bought the DVD box set a few years ago because I didn't want to wait for the second and third movies to finally reach Blu-Ray. I already have the original film on Blu-Ray. I wish they'd release them individually because I really only want the second film. Still haven't watched the third one but may have to one of these days since it at least has Megan Follows and Jonathan Crombie back. But I've heard it's not as good. I read a summary of the fourth and refuse to watch it.

Last year Sullivan did put the Anne of Green Gables movies on sale around black friday and a little bit lower at Christmas. I bought the Collector's set last year for around $95 at black Friday for around 50% off and I will able to to use the 15% off on top of that totaling 80.

So is the change in the aspect ratio of the blu-rays bad enough to stick with the OAR DVDs?
Seems that the blus are DNRed and not OAR, but the OAR DVDs are abysmal PQ. Any chance for any of these being fixed with further releases. Also: those other two series DVD sets (prices aside) are they worth checking out? |
