I grew up watching movies on scrambled cable channels, so DVD was a nice surprise and blu-ray is my wildest dreams come true. I don't think my eyes will notice an appreciable difference now from that to 4k UHD. I haven't adopted it and have no immediate plans to do so. However...that being said, I have bought several recent films in the combo format to possibly "future proof" my collection. I still watch the blu-rays in those sets, though, and do not have any inclination to upgrade movies I already own from blu to UHD. (With limited exception. For example, I will get the 4k combo for THE QUICK AND THE DEAD soon because of the addition of those deleted scenes and a digital copy code.)

I think Blu-ray is thoroughly satisfactory. When it comes to Blu-ray x UHD, I still haven't seen convincing evidence of the same leap in quality that exists between DVD and Blu-ray. I've already said that the Screenshots thread in the UHD subforum is often ridiculous. On paper, HDR doesn't sound that impressive, either. Furthermore, there are so many great movies that still haven't seen the light of day on Blu-ray, let alone 4K. Last edited by Cremildo; 07-18-2018 at 12:36 AM. |

I don't even consider standard Blu-ray releases anymore if a 4K version is available.
The Princess Bride is coming to Criterion on standard Blu-ray from a new 4K master. A year ago I'd be chomping at the bit to get my hands on that Criterion. Not anymore. I'll take the 4K Dolby Vision iTunes version over Criterion any day. Mark |

I did just cuz my 1080p TV crapped out about a year ago, and I got a great deal on a 4K set. Still was rocking just BD player though, but when that died and 4K players were the same price, I got in. Then it was time to check out the few 4K discs I had from BB steelbook combos, with mixed results. Kong didn't look any different than the BD to me, but Spider-Man Homecoming looked insanely good.
Bottom line, I'll probably buy most stuff going forward in 4K (if available, still buying mostly BD right now), but have not upgraded one single BD to 4K yet, and have no plans to. They look good enough and the difference isn't worth another purchase. |

Well new releases = 4k, why would you buy the regular Blu-ray when the UHD will have both versions? It took forever for Blu-ray to come with a DVD but 4k gave us a Blu-ray from the very beggining.

A couple years ago I spent a lot A LOT of my hard earned money on upgraded my audio to handle Dolby Atmos and dts x
Right after I did those premium audio options started becoming exclusive to 4K only titles. Once OPPO announced they would be ending production on their 4K players I wanted one badly because I wanted their flagship player to take advantage of also the analogue audio outs and SACD capability. I own so many 3D BLUs and currently really not thrilled with 4K tv options as pf yet. I love my HD Plasma way tooooooo much. So i have my 4K player connected to my AVR and i can play 4K discs and take advantage of the sometimes exclusive Atmos / X tracks and in the end also get sometimes better transfers of titles like The Matrix and Blade Runner just down converted to 1080P. Ive been buying 4K combo’s for a while because for roughly 5.00 more I could future proof certain titles. I guess in a way I’m helping 4K disc sales even if I’m not getting the full impact of what they offer. |

I started buying 4K movies but not upgraded to 4K TV or player. I don’t see myself buying too many more because honestly Blu ray quality is still fantastic & not sure I wanna spend more for a 4K upgrade especially when TVs are only $300 to $500 more than 1080p TV or Player. Doesn’t seem worthy, but when it does I’ll at least have a few 4K titles. I won’t do the brig DVD to Blu ray upgrade like I have the last couple. I’ve done my research & watched online videos & most say it’s not worthy either.

I don't have a 4K TV or player and probably won't get them until my current ones die, but I have started getting the 4K releases because why not... might as well future proof so when I have to have them, I can watch a 4K movie on a 4K TV. I've only bought 4 catalog titles so far though (because they were the previous movies in a franchise) and it's not like I'll need to upgrade EVERYTHING. I'm in no rush and as long as BD still looks good on 4K and not like how SD looks on HD then the majority of my collection will be fine how it is.
