Okay, how's this... Let's talk Star Trek.

By the way the new movies work, Chris Pine is not the same Kirk, so that role technically was not recast. But, Khan Noonien Singh was turned into a human popsicle and shot into space before the whole Kelvin thing, so he should be the same character and was recast. And throw as many tomatoes as you want at me, it's not the same. Cumberbatch doesn't come close to Montalban.

(And that little retcon in the comic book about why he isn't Indian anymore is just insulting.)

Although I generally don't care about re-casting, this example was one top of my head, having watched all three yesterday: The Oceans movies.

The whole cast is terrific in all three. But how could anyone possibly replace Clooney and Pitt? And to be honest who the hell would WANT to?

You can't. There's no up and comers that are as cool as they were. The whole rat pack era from the 60's can't be recreated in this day in age.
