Hi,

I was able to do an A/B comparison of the opening scene using the new DTS-MA 4.1 track and the old DTS-MA 5.1 track on the disc.

The new DTS-MA 4.1 track is a noticeable improvement over the old DTS-MA 5.1 track. The new track is much more balanced and less strident, with the new 4.1 track having better bass and significantly higher fidelity. The old track sounds more dated and hollow in comparison, although both are listenable - that being said while the old 5.1 sounded good on the first release, its hard to go back to listening to it after hearing the new 4.1. The new track is also recorded at a lower volume level and seems to have improved dynamic range.

Overall a worthwhile upgrade for the new DTS-MA 4.1 track for fans of the movie, as the sound plays a large role in this film.

Did you ever get your copy from them, because it's been missing from their website for a while now. They told me they were sold out and would relist it "if" they decide to issue more of them.

Well, I finally picked up the Steelbook Edition, this of course after I bought the German Mediabook edition from DiabolikDVD.

For some reason I missed the info about the Shout Steel having the 4.1 option. Previously on the Shout edition and also the German mediabook I would have opted for the 2.0 Stereo track in Dolby Surround which always sounds better than the 5.1 mix. I would note the German mediabook 2.0 Stereo is 16bit

I forgot to check the new Shout 2.0 mix not sure if it is 16 or 24

Listening to multiple sections over and over the 4.1 mix is clearly the best followed by the 2.0 Stereo and the 5.1 is just LOUD.

Comparing the image quality and there are Caps a Holic grabs out there... honestly The Shout is fine. The German, I don’t think blows it away. Specs and flecks are still on the image and compression wise in motion hard to tell a difference. Neither is 100% perfect. There are always moments I felt the image contained a noisy kind of frozen grain pattern or something like it. Only at times.

At this point I’ll keep the steelbook once amazon sends me a replacement. My copy kept freezing and skipping about 30ish / 35 mins into the movie. Disc didn’t look clean, but even after wiping it didn’t help much.

Will prob sell off the German Mediabook edition. It is region B Locked

Looks like the reviewer for the steelbook got a bit lazy. Just copying and pasting the extras section from the previous standard release. Making it seem like this steelbook has “new” extras that haven’t been released when that is not the case. Not too surprising since it’s the same reviewer that just listed the disc specs for Gkids Studio Ghibli releases and called that a review as well.
