Whoa! Awesome price for the set. I cancelled my order for the single disc at Amazon. At this price the other two movies are just $10 each. Nice!

Peter, good catch. Only the windmill sequence used Super35. I typed that note as preparation before I watched the disc and was doing the same for several others, one or two of which used Super35 for the entire film.

Gah!

I misspelled "Anamorphic"!

Yeah. VERY few directors shooting true anamorphic Panavision these days. Super35 is a virus. It makes it so hard to tell people about OAR when they can see the additional information on HBO-HD and the DVD foolscreen versions.

Eastwood, Nolan, Abrams love classic Panavision.

Google checkout doesn't have Australia, New Zealand or the UK in it's list of countries.... how odd...

Mission: Impossible III (Blu-ray)

Quote:
"Disc types and codecs aside, 'M:I III' looks magnificent on Blu-ray, just as it does on HD DVD. This 2.40:1 widescreen, 1080p transfer is hands down the best I've seen MPEG-2 deliver, and trumps what is probably the best live-action Blu-ray discs out there, 'Tears of the Sun,' 'Stealth' and 'Eight Below.' This is definitely first-rate demo material."
Quote:
"Detail and depth are also fabulous. 'M:I III' boasts one of the most three-dimensional images I've yet seen on high-def, period.

You know, i'm getting tired of the "BLu Ray looks as good as the HDDVD" crap. Sony releases a handful of subpar discs in the beginning and now HDDVD is the Bar of measure for all thing HD???
Gimme a break!

HDDVD has it's turds...and IMO just as many as Blu Ray.

I've owned HDDVD for about 7 weeks and Blu Ray for almost a week and aside from one Movie (HOFD) I don't see how HDDVD is better. Honestly, I really prefer the easier interface and speed of Blu Ray and also the PCM Lossless tracks which IMO own everything I've heard from HDDVD including DTruHD (which IMO is overrated)

I'm glad that the transfers in mpeg2 have time and time again proved as good if not better in some cases than the VC-1 encodes. Further proves how much FUD comes from M$/HDDVD camps.

brian, just read the sit down article on high deg digest with the sony reps. can you confirm or deny the vc-1 artifacting that is being discussed? in particular, they discuss backgrounds. since you are a true hd supporter (at least you have purchased something) you can at least see what is being discussed.

I can't speak for Brian, but I have seen this artifacting on Blu-ray. The posterization during Corpse Bride is an example. There is also a disolve or two during Blazing Saddles which produces some problems. Nothing severe, or bothersome, but nothing severe or bothersome with MPEG2 as well. I think too many casual reviewers are trying to judge the codec, while ignoring the intended look of the film itself.

100% agreed. You hit the nail right on the head. I think that VC-1 is an over rated fud factory from MS. Wouldn't be the first time MS has produced that. Rember the whole Windows 98 issue. Yes there are a lot of HD DVD turds. IMO more so than Blu ray. I think BD is setting more standards for PQ and SQ than HD. IMO BD SQ has been better all along. Something that HD has been trailing on for a long time. Ever heard the saying you eat with your eyes, ie food looks bad it is going to taste bad. Well I believe we also watch with our ears. If it sounds like crap the movie isn't going to be as good.

Lossless PCM does own and I'm very excited to see BV starting to put 24 bit 48Hz PCM tracks on their discs instead of 16/48 - way to go!
That's what I call the total hi-def experience.
I look forward to what Fox delivers with the DTS-HD Master Audio, which I believe will be the only other format to compare to the uncompressed PCM.

I've seen artifacting in backgrounds on 2fast2furious, seabiscuit and The perfect storm.

I've seen posterization on Corpse bride & Dinosaur but it lasts all of 10 seconds.

quite frankly all of the complaints of posterization and artifacting on both formats are so quick and so rare I think it's a moot point. It doesn't detract from the movies at all and is just nit picking by both sides. I truly believe both sides are doing the best job possible with the masters they have and the intended looks of the film. I don't think either codec is superior to the other, one just needs more room to stretch it's legs. Also one format has chosen better movies initially to roll out with. But the BDA is listening and I think they've already turned the tide and will now start the humiliation of HDDVD.

I've seen HD-DVD in all but 15 minutes (the historically incorrect Samurai) so I can't judge the jellyfish artifact Mr. Ecklund said in his interview with HighDefDigest. Anybody else with a HD-DVD player noticed this?
