How are these TCM screenings? Doesn't look like Fathom Events is involved, so maybe they're pretty good. I've had negative experiences with Fathom and have avoided them for years.
Personally, I'd rather pay those prices to get a chance to see to films I already like on the big screen than a lot of current films. |

These screenings are in conjunction with Fathom Events but overall, they're pretty good. The good news is that they're using DCPs with their programs now. |

I've been going to most of the TCM screenings via Fathom for years. The quality has greatly improved. They started out as satellite feeds the way some Fathom screenings are, but I guess TCM was either unhappy with the quality or had a lot of complaints from cinephiles. They switched to DCPs around 2015 or so, and the results have been great ever since (which is why I find the earlier comment about Singin' in the Rain looking like a DVD baffling. The 2012 screening of it which was a satellite feed, yes, but not the 2017 one).
I'm a member of TCM's Backlot, and when you join one of their local chapters, you get to attend these screenings for free (well, "free" since you pay $70 a year for membership, but I figure it pays for itself with all the screenings I attend plus the exclusive online archive I get). I find 2019's lineup really exciting even though: a) I've seen Oz, Ben-Hur, and Lawrence theatrically before, and b) four of the films are from 1989. I enjoy all the films in the lineup, so I'm excited to check them out on the big screen with my TCM local chapter gang. |

Edit: OK, the post above mine says they're doing proper DCP's, so maybe they're not so bad anymore. |

I saw a Fathom screening of the first Boondock Saints back in 2010 and I remember how crappy the quality was. It looked like a projected DVD.
I made it to the Die Hard screening last Wednesday, and it was night and day. It was more than worth the price, IMO. Unfortunately I couldn't be less interested in any of the titles being offered next year. Hope there's a good draw for these so it can continue in to 2020. |

It's a shame that The Wild Bunch (1969) isn't on that list, it's the 50th anniversary next year. I'm hoping Warner do a new 4K scan for the anniversary, the old transfer is getting a bit long in the tooth.

Unrelated to this upcoming series, but I just watched The Black Hole (1979) last night on TCM (I had dvr'd it about a month ago). I'm kind of bummed out that I watched it now. I had seen it growing up and basically had forgotten about the movie since then, but something in the back of my mind was telling me that it was good. Was I wrong. The movie was garbage. The actors seemed unsure of what they should be doing, and the special effects looked archaic based on the standards during that time. It felt like a studio hurried up the production of a movie to try to piggy back on the success of Star Wars.

The TCM Big Screen Classics lineup officially got posted today, and it confirms the list posted earlier, but with My Fair Lady in the February spot and The Godfather: Part II not listed. I think TCM is working something out with Paramount and isn't ready to announce it, yet, because their official list has nothing for November - the month Godfather II's supposed to be screening.

On the other hand The Wizard of Oz, My Fair Lady and Ben-Hur were DCP. So it looks like they pick and choose which get DCP. Also not all DCP are listed on https://cinema.dcinema.com/default.aspx as the Wizard of Oz and Gone With The Wind (an addition Fathom added, not part of this series) were actually DCP as theaters got hard drives for those, but yet did not reflect on that site. |
