So I recommend the pick a shelf technique

P.S. My shelves are alphabetically sorted and not by genres.
Know what you mean. This weekend I was browsing through the free movies on Vudu and there were over 3000. I watched two in a row and was already pretty fatigued afterwards. Like someone else mentioned I often have the same problem of starting a movie late and being unable to stay awake to complete it. And my gal hates it when we don't go to bed at the same time, so it's often a no-win situation.

It's not so much a problem on the few ocassions when it's just me, but when it's my wife, two daughters and I, it becomes a challenge. So I keep a short movie watch list and subtract and add to it every so often. Much easier for the four of us to look over a list with 50 or so movies vs the entire collection.

Bingo. I get the impression a lot of folks on here are younger and/or bachelors. It's really tough to squeeze in a movie from say Vinegar Syndrome or Scream Factory when you have a wife, family, etc. A lot of us have to constantly compromise with romantic comedies and kids' films through most of our watching. And even with horror it often ends up being post-Scream type movies that I rarely like much.

that's what I do as well... but sometimes it still takes me forever to decide!

I think the biggest factor to me is wanting to have "the premium experience" watching certain movies. Meaning not being interrupted by multiple everyday family stuff and also being able to watch the entire thing through.

For this reason I often choose movies that I've already seen knowing that I may have to stop it for interruptions or because I started it later in the evening after work and I know I won't have the time to finish...

I've done something very similar--- many times I pull a movie for watching later in the day/evening and then change my mind and grab something else.

I also am notorious for picking out a second movie to start if I have time later-- and that one gets changed as well at least half the time!

Anywhere from a few seconds if I've already been thinking about it and have something planned up to 35-40 minutes if I have to peruse the collection and can't settle on anything. My collection is at the moment split between horror/exploitation on a set of 3 shelves and then everything else I own on a different, separate set of 3 shelves. What I often end up with is doing a cursory glance of the horror section where I slide out anything/everything that jumps out as a possibility. From there I then weigh my options of what has been slid out to help whittle things down. There are a variety of factors that influence what I watch on a given night but if I'm being honest, on most occasions looking for a movie to watch at home is very similar to how it was when I went to the local rental stores growing up. I peruse the sections, considering items I've watched and haven't watched, put together double/triple features and marathons in my head, admire artwork, look at run times, etc. Picking out a movie at home is a bit of an experience in itself for me which as corny as that sounds, is something I typically don't mind.

It usually only takes me a few minutes to decide what to watch. I'm always working my way through a couple different TV shows on Blu-ray. If I'm not in the mood for a few TV episodes I'll first filter my collection by the movies I haven't watched yet. If I want to narrow that down I'll filter by a particular genre I think I'm in the mood for or other criteria. If nothing strikes my fancy I'll include titles I've seen already. And if all else fails I'll blindly pick something at random and watch it which I do just for fun a couple times a month anyway.

This is usually not a problem for me. I'll get a hankering to watch a particular movie when I'm at work, and then, when I get home that evening, I'll watch it. As such, I can usually decide which movie to watch at the drop of a hat.

Actually finding that particular movie in my collection is another matter, though...

Here's an idea for those looking for a fun way to mix things up with respects to deciding on something to watch. I'm thinking I might do this for the entire month of January coming up. Should be fun. This would just be for the movies that I watch though, not for TV shows.

Whatever movie I start with, the next movie has to include a cast member that was also in the prior film that I watched. Rinse and repeat for the entire month. Might be a fun idea for a forum thread actually. Anytime someone does this they could detail the list of movies and see if anyone can figure out the cast member carry over from movie to movie.

It can take awhile some days if I don't have some form of a plan. I started pulling unwatched titles forward on my shelves and also have a few stacks to choose from as my 1st option. These titles are sometimes movies I've seen before upgraded from DVD or blind buys. If I have trouble finding something I'll focus on a director or series to keep me busy for the next few viewings. Sometimes I'll check birthdays on IMDB and watch based off of that. During the work week I usually have time for an episode of a show or 1/2 a movie. Currently on a rewatch of Sopranos with my gf, she's never seen it. I'm not a fan of only watching 1/2 of a movie so sometimes I'll watch special features instead. I tend to overthink this process as many others do, too many movies and not enough time as always.

A movie chain.

That was done in January of this year in the 50 Movie Challenge thread:

Anyone else get the urge to watch a particular movie, then doesn't end up watching it for whatever reason, then the next day doesn't feel like watching it? Happens to me all the time lol.
