I feel like this is a horror film for folks that feel like they've seen everything. It's by no means as bloody, violent, exploitative, etc as many other films out there, but it is a part of a very small niche of films that fall under the unofficial banner of folk-horror and as a result scratches an itch you likely never even knew existed.

The film is so different, and such a breath of fresh air from the usual items that it makes for a fun unique experience and impression.
I totally missed the initial post. I was - no lie- coming on to find the link to Amazon.uk to import this title and stopped in the forum first and found this and am glad I did. I've been working my way through the excellent Evolution of Horror podcast which recently finished a season on folk horror and realized I'd never gotten around to picking this up. I don't think it's the greatest British horror film but it may be the one whose quality surprised me the most. This is welcome news.

Just to explain in case anyone reads the above comment and gets the impression that this film once existed in a different cut as an anthology film (which I'm sure wasn't cake's intent to suggest): It was conceived as an anthology of three stories that they later converted into one story at the script stage (I think), so it never started filming as an anthology or released in that form.

Yeah, that's what I meant of course. You can kinda see where the segments were as originally written, and you can see that the little connective scenes added to try and make them hang together feel a bit grafted on here and there. It's a messy movie. But, IMO, it works quite well till the last bit when you get
[Show spoiler]Linda Hayden running haphazardly around the woods with evil eyebrows and the pompous old toot coming in with his extremely long Satan-slaying gun.

Yeah you can definitely feel the anthology roots in the first hour of the film, it's a messy movie as you say but for once messy just adds to the idiosyncratic charm of the piece. I love the ending:
[Show spoiler]A completely sozzled, 50yr old, short and fat Pat Wymark turns up as a ****ing claymore wielding devil slayer? Show me one person who predicted that finale and I will show you a liar!

Ha Ha. Yeah, the ending is... unpredictable, if not quite the extreme 'methods' he claimed he was going to have to put to use. The atmosphere on this one though really epitomizes what we're calling 'folk horror' these days.
[Show spoiler] The scenes in the attic with the infected fiancé are my favorite.

I'm glad to see this get a US release. I already have the UK blu, I definitely recommend this for anymore into 70s British horror.

David Gregory had a few words about the 4K remaster on a recent podcast.

There will be a folk horror documentary,
a interview with the director,
and Linda Hayden will be involved in some capacity.
No doubt more...somebody must be doing a new commentary, no?
.
Also mentioned they restored BEAST IN THE CELLAR,
another wayward to Blu Tigon film is coming this year.

Can't wait for this release, saw the movie at the Library of Congress AV Archive a while back and the print wasn't great. So I'm really looking forward to this disc looking as good as possible.

I'm skeptical of this looking like a revelation, partly cause Severin, and partly cause of the cheapness of the production being stressed a lot in the various features I've seen/heard, which seem to imply to me that the washed-out, kinda mushy look it has might be endemic to the film. Obviously the new scan is worth it, I just am not convinced it CAN look very good and thus might be disappointing if you're expecting something that will blow away the last disc. Which, IMO, doesn't have that much more detail than the DVD (but is obviously a gigantic upgrade). I'm keeping my expectations low, but who knows.

Yep, that's the best part as far as horror goes.

I pre-ordered the uk 4K restoration that will be released in June, but I may get Severin release (most likely a bundle pre-order). If anybody knows will these be two different transfers? Kind of a coincidence that these two will be released in the summer.

Looks like the full movie is available to watch on YouTube for free, not the best quality of course, but might watch part of it to see if it's something I would want to buy.

I doubt it! You'd have to contact the labels though, no one from Severin posts here.

Had never heard of this movie until I saw A History of Horror recently with Mark Gatiss, and he interviewed the director while visiting one of the filming locations. Looked interesting. I noticed it was on TCM's schedule for October (I think the 11th, if I'm not mistaken), so I'm looking forward to checking it out.

The new remastered UK release looks quite good to me, and it is region free (despite what the box says). I'm fine with that version. I wouldn't sleep on it for too long if you're thinking about picking it up, however - it is an individually numbered limited edition.

I do as well, and I'm happy with it also.
Linda Hayden steals the movie in more ways than one.
I'd say if you like Hammer and Amicus films of the 70's, you'll enjoy this one.

I'm weak though - I'll double dip on the Severin if the Folk Horror documentary is a proper doc, not just a 30 minute featurette.
