I think it is interesting what you guys mention about the musical score on the Director's Cut is different and that they did not use the "I Beleive" song in it. The soundtrack usually sets the right mood when watching, and it is very important for my movie experience.

Speaking of the soundtrack: Pachelbel's "Canon in D", is featured both in "My Sassy Girl" and "The Classic" 클래식 (2003).

I'm not sure if it was EDKO that changed it but I can offer some info.
I think the confusion is that when the film was first released back in 2001/02, the HK EDKO DVD was the only way to watch the theatrical cut (123 min) whereas the 2-disk Korean DVD was the director's cut (137 min), even though both used the same video master. Though the HK EDKO dvd had a lot of the director's cut footage as an extra. And maybe about a year or two later, EDKO finally released the director's cut DVD also. From an interview with the director that I read long ago (gotta be right after when the director's cut was released so like in 2002), he originally envisioned for the film to use "My Girl" from the Temptations and the soundtrack to "Ashes of Time", as seen in the director's cut of the film. Of course the film was a success in the theaters so the distributor more likely used some of that money to purchase the copyright for the soundtracks above. Anyway, I think the music used for the theatrical cut suited the film very well, despite the director having other preferences in mind. The biggest change for me was with the song "I Believe". In the theatrical cut, it's played during the final credits while in the director's cut, it's the song "My Girl". "I Believe" is most memorable for me because the first time I saw "My Sassy Girl" which was EDKO DVD, I was in tears in the end because the final reveal was so f**king perfect. ![]() Last edited by gskmeva; 03-20-2019 at 07:59 AM. "I Believe" is a great song and that theme is used well in the movie. However, after THAT ending I do think the song is too slow - and feels kinda melancholic or sad which I think is the wrong choice, "My Girl" is more happy and feelgood and suits the ending better.
Also, since I haven't watched the theatrical, I did some research about what scenes in the Director's Cut that have been added (19 scenes, ca 14 minutes) and to be honest I wouldn't have cut out most of them. Don't agree at all that they don't add anything to the movie. Except for the added prison scenes, they can go. But for the most part, the added scenes make the movie funnier or they add to the drama (how can the balconyscene not be in the theatrical) and there are nice character moments that I would have missed watching the theatrical. Now I'm REALLY glad it's the Director's Cut being released. But of course, they should have released both and made everyone happy. Maybe it's a rights issue or some mastering issue, or maybe the Director's Cut is more well regarded in SK? |

Okay, so the soundtrack of the Director's cut vs. the theatrical is any different except for the "I Believe" at the end credit, and of course the added scenes ? If that is the case then I can live with that and would not mind getting only the Director's cut.
By the way, thanks for the info gskmeva and DougieJ ! |

It's really surreal for me that this release is actually coming.
I have the same feeling as when it was a sure thing that JSA was coming, very excited and yet still a feeling of disbelief. I guess you get that when you gave up on something and then it appears ![]() For me, it's also a hard choice. I really like the images on the full slip, but that classic cover of the lenticular..... Many years ago I gave up on buying double blu-ray's for different covers, but this may be the rare occassion that I wander from that path ![]() |

Yeah, I'm a bit wary of lenticulars, if only because there is so much plastic already in the world. The overall package does seem to favour the lenti, though IMO.

Are you planning to throw your new blu-ray of "My Sassy Girl" into a landfill? If not, don't worry about it. That awful plastic won't ruin the planet sitting on your shelf. As for me, though, I'll be buying the full slip. I'm used to the other image from the DVD, and a change would be nice. |
