i saw it in the theater last night.
Very good movie i sense a couple of pop outs but not many its like most cpu animation now depth more than anything coming out of the screen. Now the 3d trailer for Mulan had some good pop outs. |

Saw this last night. Film was great. Medium depth throughout. A few pop outs relating to fairies and pixies flying in the opening and again later in the film.

I saw this yesterday afternoon and 3D was pretty lackluster. Nothing strong and I didn't notice any pop-outs to speak of. Not a buy for me.

To be fair there are a handful of medium-strong pop-outs, especially in the first 10 minutes (numerous pixies in the opening 'swooping camera' shot and the dragon pet going crazy in the house, to name two)... Though yes, once the protagonists leave on their journey it tends to be mostly medium depth, nothing objectively strong stereoscopically. I went in with low expectations given Pixar's reputation for weak-medium 3D. Still I found the dimensionality added by the 3D throughout was very welcome (especially during sequences featured in trailers, like the canyon-crossing, angry manticore, and highway chase...) and was thankfully helped by the chosen cinematographic style. You do have to like the film itself for it to be a buy of course. Though it's not one of Pixar's greats it's definitely good enough for me to preorder in 3D!

I missed the first few minutes of it, maybe five. I don't usually buy cartoons anyway but if the 3D is full of pop-outs, like Thunder and the House of Magic, I will. |

Unfortunately, you missed the best part of the movie from a 3D perspective. There was a "fly thorough" of the ancient land and it is the strongest 3D in the movie. As was mentioned earlier, once the movie gets into the real story, the 3D is fairly tame.

Just watched it and yes there are a few scenes with pop-outs as others have mentioned but overall pretty bland 3D. Not as bad as ParaNorman but pretty close to it. I wish I had seen it in the Imax or Dolby theatre. For trailers, the Trolls World Tour looked pretty good for 3D, the rest - Mulan, The Sponge Bob Movie: Sponge on the Run and Minions: The Rise of Gru, the 3D looked bland.

There were some shots of characters quickly moving left and right that didn't feel suited to a 3D expression. But overall I was pleasantly surprised by the 3D throughout. A lot of fun with the pixies popping out of frame. Ian crossing the bottomless gorge might be the strongest 3D yet seen in a Pixar film, tons of vertigo. You can tell the stereography team watched THE WALK.
As for 3D trailers, SPONGEBOB didn't offer much z-axis fun, but SPONGE OUT OF WATER's marketing entirely hid that it was a 3D trip, so I'm still confident the new one will be as well. TROLLS WORLD TOUR looks trippy as hell, fantastic 3D from Dreamworks as usual. But MULAN alone passed the flinch test. Arrows shot straight into the camera, it's clearly intended for 3D viewing. Me either but the reality is that for many of us it IS over when our current 3D TVs die off or we feel the need to upgrade to something newer. I dont plan that anytime soon but Im under no illusion that 3D will last forever. It just wont. But I'll enjoy it while I can.
Might pre-order this..... it seems to be getting good reviews. |

I like the 3D primarily because of the much better immersion. Popouts are sometimes a nice-to-have, but a good layering is more important. And that is what Pixar movies usually do very well.
"Onward" will be a 100% buy. |
