Is there much chance of a label in the States (Universal themselves or a niche label) doing a release of the series?
the boxset is region free (i own it) you can import it and it will plays everywhere

I bought the German set recently thinking it would be free of this black crush issue. But guess what, its identical to the UK set. Black crush galore. I now plan on buying the French set. This will be my third purchase of this on Blu-ray.

I'm so looking forward to it. Was so disappointed when I watched that one episode and couldn't see a ****in' thing at the end.

Pretty torn on this. I’m not sure it was worth the $130 I paid for it.

I do not at all like the packaging which is very flimsy(stacked discs)
I don’t like the disc, menu screen, box artwork.

Antiquated HD transfer which isn’t near as good as Other Universal shows like Six Million Dollar Man, Buck Rogers.

Obviously I miss the English subtitles, especially considering I might be hearing impaired in my old age (hearing isn’t exactly perfect now).

Some of the episodes being shortened( cut) is also another negative.
Overall the picture quality is a decent improvement over the DVD, but nothing to give mountains of praise about. Just a modest improvement.

I might end up selling this and going back to the DVD sets. Taking a hit in picture quality might be worth it this time around, and believe me I never usually say that.

And the baked in French subtitles whenever a sign appears on screen (more frequent than you would expect, and Breaks the mood\experience of the show every time it happens).

Please don't do that on my word alone. I really suggest you try it out, you can always resell it at close to the price you paid for it, if you don't care for it.

I have seen a lot of glowing impressions from others that own the set. It just isn't that great for me.

Too late now. Doesn't really matter anyway. No way was I gonna buy it after you mentioned baked in subtitles. That was the clincher for me. Although, I forgot to bold that bit where you mentioned some of the episodes have been shortened/cut. **** that shit.

Oh my word. Based on the various comments/observations from people on here, there are faults with the UK, French and German releases of the series. Has it had a release in Australia? I'm looking to there and the States. Think I'm going to hold onto my copies of the American DVD releases of the five seasons.

No Australian release.

So apparently this release has burnt in subtitles, but is the black crush issue present? I'd also like to know if the cuts mentioned are exclusive to this set or are also present on the others.

"French subtitles whenever a sign appears on screen" must be on how you have your system set up cause it doesn't on mine .
The French version crushes the rest !

So flimflam69 didn't even check if the subtitles could be turned off before posting misinformation all over the internet? Good job. Someone cancelled their order because of you.

If someone else does decide to order the French release, I would be interested to know what style of packaging Amazon use.

I'm going to sound stupid, but I'm sure when I checked Amazon.fr, I couldn't see an option to change the language to English (which you can do on Amazon.de).

So yeah, I checked, and the option of the ONE French subtitles on, or off is more complex than that. There is a second subtitle option buried in the submenu of the player that allows the French "sign" subtitles to be turned off.
I tried three players and all of them were default to the French Sign subs, and as I never check the submenu of the player I'm using(I never have a reason to) I never would have known this.
It would have been nice if the set up menu made clear there are TWO subtitle options instead of just subs on, or off. I guess that is what threw me off.

I apologize for the mistake, as it was certainly not my intention to mislead anyone. It makes the set that much better in my opinion, and am glad to have learned this.

I don't own the series you are referring to on BD.

I'll be sure to go watch it on Amazon though since the quality there is actually decent!

I was pleasantly surprised to get this set today, after the first shipping movement just nine days ago! As mentioned upthread, I got the more compact version of the set (not the long box with the book in French), which is totally fine with me as it takes up less space.

Can someone who owns this please post pics of the packaging? And are there any English bonus features for this blu-Ray release that aren't on the U.S. DVD sets?

After picking this set up a few months ago, I finally resumed my watch-through of the series (having started watching with the UK BD set). I just have one episode of Season 1 left and I'm struck by how same-same they all are, plot-wise. That probably isn't much of a surprise to others, but since I'm seeing most of these for the first time, it stood out to me.

The set itself seems really well-done so far though! The picture is really solid, as is the audio and I haven't had any issues with French subtitles popping up randomly as I'd heard about. It's a little bit of a bummer there are no English subtitles on this set, but I can deal with that. I haven't checked out any bonus features yet, but I understand there are at least some in English, so I'll watch them later, probably after I finish the series.
