John Wick 3 still going strong. Hopefully Rambo V does well too.

The little movie studios they get digested by the big sharks.
In this era of Marvel's Endgame it's getting tougher to survive.
John Wick is the only exception...The Matrix guy.

The last Hell Boy...what the heck happened there! ...What a total waste of misery!

This quarter loss doesn't even include Hellboy, since that was an April release. This is a 24 million loss from pre-March 31st. JW3 might offset Hellboy's loss, unless Millennium did bankroll it as Celluoid said.

Back in 2017, Sony’s film division once lost $920 million for a quarter and I recall many other studios with quarterly losses over $50 million at times.

Well I guess the key difference is Sony has had ups and downs, whereas Lionsgate just keeps going downward. For instance, Sony profited 211 million this recent quarter:

https://variety.com/2018/biz/asia/so...it-1203014029/

Which came after the previous quarter which lost 69 million. Whereas Lionsgate has done many layoffs and still falling down. Lionsgate stock has declined 50% from 2018-2019

https://variety.com/2019/film/news/l...q3-1203131637/

Sony by comparison has a few franchises to lean on, (Jumanji, Spider-Man, etc); Lionsgate has nothing outside of John Wick. Hunger Games is dead, Gods of Egypt was meant to be one and failed, Hellboy was meant to be one and failed, etc.

Lionsgate just need to get a new business model. They also released that Robin Hood turd as well... a 100 million dollar movie that couldn't even reach it's budget total worldwide. Hellboy was just a moronic mistake from the get go.

Perhaps they should go back to smaller films, horror films, international etc...

People here are acting like they lost 24 billion dollars.

A 24 million loss on revenues of over 900 million is not a big deal (it's an operating margin of -2.6%). A decent movie performance could have pushed them into the black.

^ I'm so glad someone else agrees.

Lionsgate ain't Sony though bruv!! For all their juggernaut franchises in recent years (Twilight via Summit, Hunger Games) they're still very much a US-centric mini-major and they, like pretty much everyone else, are trying to get new franchises going and when that doesn't happen then earnings start to slip. It's when a slump becomes a trend that they'd really start to worry, thankfully JW3 should keep the wolves from the door for a while longer. I'd hate to see one of the best studios for UHD output get swallowed up by some catalogue-hating major like Disney.

Or make some films that are good and in demand. Hellboy? Really? Who even cares about that nonsense? Obviously very few people. Same for Robin Hood. That storyline has been made into films multiple times and it’s clear that people just don’t care or find Robin Hood very interesting.

They've go Mr J. Wick this quarter and Mr J. Rambo next quarter to boost their bottom line, so clearly they just need to make more movies with main characters called John.

Hopefully this will twist their arm into licensing out some of the cult catalogue titles they've been sitting on for years.
