go with the panasonic bd30 can't go wrong with this unit I'm very happy that I went with the panny. Other people that I know who had the sammy 1400 exchanged it for another brand didn't want to deal with the problems with the samsung 1400. better do it soon before you get stuck with it. I dunno i'm not trying to put down samsung but with my experience with the 2 units i had i didn't want to take a chance with a 3rd unit.

LB or GH,
Hey! Hey! Problem solved! Don't knock it 'till you try it. Love my 1400!

got 2 1400's, so far no problems......good player, do I think it is as good as the BD30...NO but if someone gave it to me as a gift, I would definitely keep it. It is a good player, you should be fine
keep it

first off, it is NOT that slow of a disc reader. Yes, the java based blu rays will take a little more time than non java's, but youre gonna get that with most every player. The only problem i had with playing pirates 3 was it had like 8 previews on the stupid disc that i had to skip through. I've loaded and watched all the pirates movies, live free or die hard, and the new resident evil apocalypse blu rays flawlessly many, many times. I also think people put too much emphasis on load times. i mean come on, if you have that bad of ADD to sit for one lousy minute to let the 2 hour movie you're about to sit through load, then put the movie in and go to the bathroom or get some food. my god.

it also is NOT that noisy. I'm not going to grab an spl meter and measure how many dB's this thing is putting off, but when I'm watching a movie, even over quiet dialogue passages, the last thing im concentrating on is how the blu ray drive sounds. If I were to start hearing a big ol noisy fan starting up like on the 60gb and 80gb ps3's, then I may be a bit concerned. The noise coming off this machine was the absolute last of my concerns. Especially since I'm sure you will be having multiple other components running such as an av receiver, tv or projector (which some can be disgustingly noisy), amps, etc. All of which are generating a fair amount of noise as well.

the pausing issue, I also have not had any problems with. I've watched pirates 3 a lot of times, and unless i physically turn the power off on the samsung, it always restarts right where i left off. I've let it sit around for atleast half an hour before. Maybe you will be breaking from the movie for longer and the samsung will end stopping the disc and i havent noticed that yet. But come on, maybe its just me, but if im getting up in the middle of a movie for longer than 30 minutes, i shouldnt be watching a movie.

I think the samsung is great. and with your 3 year service plan, it would be so easy to get the new samsung whenever it comes out by conning the retard best buy folk or wherever you got it. I cant even count how many times i've brought in a purchase made at best buy with a service plan and have just gotten in store credit for me to spend on whatever i wanted in the store. In which case you could get whatever you wanted at that point.

BUT .... if you still want to return it, wait for the panny bd50. its profile 2.0

and thus concludes a minor portion of my venting about people hating on the sammy 1400 ........ more to come later im sure
mr peepers for president! I like your style. I agree whole heartedly with ya. I do think that people put way too much into all this crap. The 1400 has been a fine unit for me and I was one that had a multitude of issues with the 1200. Took it back and got the 1400 and very pleased now. Blu-Ray technology is new and will have a learning curve involved. More information to be read off a disk and newer performing hardware to read it.

The 1400 is a fantastic player. Yes there may b problems but there are problems wioth every player. You mine as well open the player but still keep everyhing and just test out a couple of movies, if everything works i wouldn't undersdtand why ud return it. Unless you r in luv wit pic in pic which is kinda lame to me.

I got my dad a Samsung bp1400 for Christmas. Long story short, its a piece of crap, so I took it back to best buy. I have a PS3, so I have something to compare it with. The box was already opened, and they took it back and gave me store credit since they were all out of the Sony S300. A week later I found an S300 at my Best Buy, so I got it and my dad is very happy with it.

Best Buy has a pretty generous return policy right now (until January 31). Just tell them you got it for a gift and its no problem, they wont care for a receipt.

Comparing the Samsung bp1400 to the Sony S300, the S300 loads much faster, does not have any problem playing any movie (1400 does not play some), and the software running the player is much more stable and efficient in the Sony.

Comparing the S300 to the PS3, well the PS3 loads way faster, almost instantaniously. On the other hand, the S300 seems to make for a slightly (and I mean slightly) sharper picture. I did test this on the same projector (sim2 Domino 30h) with HDMI and running Rattatuille. Sound was about the same on both.

to me the S300 is nowhere close to the same value as the 1400
The 1400 has a couple features over the S300:

-Samsung is HDMI 1.3, I think the Sony is only 1.2
-S300 has no HD audio decoding or passing though bitstream (this is a big downside)
- No ethernet

These reasons, especially the lack of bitstreaming the HD audio or even decoding it and sending it as PCM, are big drawbacks when considering the S300. I got my Sammy 1400 for 220 from CC so to me there is nothing even close to that value.

If the PS3 had the advanced audio it would be hands down the best player on the market, I do not think many will dispute that either. It has everythig else hands down IMO. doesnt have the HD audio either

Default Sammy 1400 return for BD30

I purchased a Sammy 1400 (open box) from BB got 5 free movies in store and 5 free mail in. Brought the Sammy home it wouldn't play any Blu-Ray movies. It played DVD and CDs but not Blu-Ray. I updated the firmware - still no luck. It played about 10 seconds of Spiderman III than stopped. I took it back to BB (I kept the movies). Traded it in for a Panny BD30 and they were nice enough to give me 5 free and 5 mail in again. No issues with the Panny - I haven't upgraded the firmware as of yet since I have I have had no issues.

Man!!! you have a cool bestfriend, he even got you a 3 year warranty, but why did you lie? by telling him you needed the receipt to get the 5 free BD but in reallity you just wanted to return the unit. If I were you I'll keep it specially w/ a 3 year warranty.

Congrats on your new player.
Well it wasn't a total lie I do need the receipt for the 5 free movies. I just don't want him to think he got the wrong one. Now I got the player everyone is happy.

Man, I got an open box Samsung P1400 at Best Buy and only got ONE free in store movie!

I'm happy with the 1400's BD playback. The DVD playback is another story; I cannot get rid of the edge softness, and it doesn't have the picture "sharpen" feature that the model P1200 has. I've left my old progressive scan DVD player hooked up and it has a much better and sharper picture. Does the Sony or Panasonic player have a better upconversion for standard DVDs?

I can't remember that feature when I had my 1200 before I returned it for the 1400, but you are correct in that, there is no adjustment for that setting on the BDPs menu adjustments.

I would suggest, however, that you go into your TV settings and adjust from there. I'm satisfied with PQ on the SDVDs, and would agree that they do look a bit "softer", but cleaner by far than a standard player. I wish I could see what you're seeing so I can a better grasp on it.
