Amazon links don’t work (maybe the Blu-raydotcom ref kills it) but I ordered through search. For some reason the Amazon exclusive doesn’t ship to the US but at least I got a preorder in on the standard 4K.
Wouldn't they use the same video encode with different audio? It's the Japanese fellows DNR'ing it at source which is what I'm worried about, they're a bit like the Germans in that they don't likes grainses, precious.

US anime distributors are actual garbage and none of them are doing UHD anyway and even if they did it’d take a few extra years as they be slow AF; I’d rather just get it from the source.

Trailer looks similar to Ghost in the Shell 4K but with more color and contrast because of the source. Good enough for me.

If you check the thread in the international UHD forum it says that a US release is "also expected", and after spending £85 on the GITS JPN set there's no way in hell I'm there on day 1 for this. If I'm buying DNR'ed junk I'd rather not be charged up the a*sehole for it.

It’s Funimation in the US IIRC, best known for masters that've been futzed with or highly compressed or have badly converted subs or missing tracks; anime in the US is a mess. It might turn out good but I suspect I’ll still end up with the Japanese release.

It won’t be coming out for over a year so who knows, we may be pleasantly surprised by good information on a US release before then. If they literally just copy the Japanese author (only tweaking the menu language) I’ll be shocked but I have absolutely no faith that will happen.

I would love to see a proper 4K scan of the camera negative. If they're going to DNR whatever scan they use, forget it. Thankfully the Blu-ray is pretty awesome and very film-like.

If you thought Innocence was bad, you’ve seen nothing until you see what TMS has done with their UHDs...

Amazon exclusive stuff in Japan never lets you ship outside Japan. It’s just how things are, sadly.

Looks like GitS 4K, and aren’t both of them from Emotion? I’d expect a similar treatment.

Innocence is a different studio IIRC, and they used that garbage *automated* DNR process instead of regular ol’ garbage DNR.

Japan on 24 April. There’s no US release date yet.

Also, I’m glad it has the original theatrical 1988 mix and not just the Hypersonic mix.

No, both of them were handled by Q-Tec, the studio every anime fan hates.

In all honesty, if this is another GITS then there's no way I'm spending £50+ on importing it from Japan, and if this is another Innocence then it's not worth a fiver, never mind fifty.

Obviously we now know it won’t have a new remix, but even if it did, I could see it not being Atmos. To my knowledge, Atmos can “only” handle 48kHz, so if Yamashiro (the composer) wanted to go crazy, he would’ve use a codec that supports higher kHz values than Atmos.

Atmos or no Atmos, the 24 bit track on the Akira release is probably the most powerful sounding audio mix I have ever heard.
