#TheLionKing still ruled the #boxoffice on FRI with $22.3M. Wknd shd reach about $77M to repeat at #1, but with sharp 60% drop. Domestic cume will shatter $300M today and surge to $350M+ after 2nd wknd.

Meanwhile, A24’s Chinese drama The Farewell with $1.4M in No. 10 in weekend 3 at 135 theaters is the platform release of the summer. We hear core runs for Farewell are still solid, but the added commercial runs less so. Still very good with New York, LA, and San Francisco being the strongest cities. Grosses in Houston, Sacramento and Philadelphia were also strong, but they were exclusive in the art houses.

I wonder if people hear the great word of mouth but then find out its 90% in Mandarin and subtitled and get turned off. I'm gonna be bummed if this fizzles out.

Either way, going to see it for my third time this week tonight.

Hard to say, I usually think it’s best to be upfront about these things in marketing the movie. Because if people know what to expect, I feel the heart and humor of the film are easy to win audiences over, and people who hate subtitled films were likely never going to go for it.

I did know from the preview that there would be some Mandarin dialogue, but it did surprise me that it turned out to be the vast majority of the film. Wasn’t a big issue for me, but when I recommended the film to my sister, I did make sure to mention it was a subtitled film, as well as not a downbeat or depressing one (which seemed possible given the plot synopsis), and then she and her friend also really enjoyed the movie.

I think it will be OK once it hits the regular multiplexes everywhere. Right now in my area it’s only playing at a dumpy Landmark indie theater. Hopefully it will be able to tap into some of that Crazy Rich Asians audience.

The AMCs I frequent currently have 3 films that are in Mandarin or Cantonese and the target audiences for those films show up and support them. They often sell out. Not to mention the other films they currently have that are in Hindi, Punjabi, and Tagalog.

- Looking Up (Mandarin w/ English subtitles)

Lulu Wang's THE FAREWELL expanded into 135 venues in its 3rd week and scored $1.5M, $11k per, $3.6M total.

Bleecker Street's THE ART OF SELF-DEFENSE took a finger through the forehead, dropping -71% in just its 3rd week with $311k on 541 screens, $2M total.
