Not buying a BD-R release.

However, now a HD master is out there maybe someone else will licence it.

^ It’s Lionsgate. They don’t ever license their titles. I normally don’t wish for things like this, but if they’re bought out by another company (as has been rumored for a few years), then I would not complain if it’s by someone like Universal that’s more than happy to license their catalog.

It's about time Gods and Monsters came to blu.

Fraser and McKellen are dynamite in this picture. It's a great watch, especially for James Whale enthusiasts.

This was my most wanted McKellen and Fraser film in the high def format.
(I imported the region B of the Quiet American with Fraser so I'm covered there, although the transfer's certainly nothing special)

This will be a day one purchase for me.

There's been an HD master for years. That means nothing.

Don't buy it. Don't enjoy it. You're only hurting yourself.

BD-R, no thanks. VUDU has it on their 3 for $5 sale right now. https://www.vudu.com/content/movies/mixandmatch/34183

It's not hurting me in the least. I don't want to pay for a BD-R disc. I've had DVD-Rs in the past become coasters, so I'm not playing that game again.

They’ve licensed to Criterion and Arrow but it’s pretty rare of them to do so

This is $7.99 on iTunes, so I'd rather buy it there than buying a BD-R.

So, I bought the Under the Silver Lake BD-R just to see how it compares to the previous BD-R I've ever bought. I actually thought it was pretty nice. No weird barcode, quality box, and even though the backside is black I can still see through it like a normal Blu-ray to the cover.

Picture quality was fantastic, and honestly felt like a normal Blu-ray. I had the idea of paying for something burnt, but honestly this was still great quality for something that was burnt. Not a bad effort from Lionsgate. I'll be picking up Gods and Monsters without a doubt now.

Yes, I know.

The problem is the lottery of will it play or not next time you fancy watching it.

I would say the odds are pretty good. They should last more than 50 years. I have burnet CD's from over 20 years that work fine and I would assume BD-R's are a step up in technology since then.

It's not hurting you in the least but, yet, the first thing you did was come in here and complain?

There's reasons discs CAN fail. Most of the time, I blame it on the owner

Irrelevant to burnt media, they can be treated perfectly and still fail.

I have some old burnt media that has lasted for ages. Equally some randomly just don't work properly the next time I go to use them, no particular reason it's very random. Enough for my not to buy commercial burnt product anymore. Obviously using good quality medias and burning at lower speeds helps insure against bad discs immensely, but you can't make this choice with burnt MOD releases, you just get what you are given.

CD-Rs in my experience tend to be more stable. The more data a disc can hold, the higher the chances of unreadable sectors forming. I can recall one occasion though where I had a CD-R containing data had a corrupt batch of files on it. Not all, but parts of the disc were unrecoverable. Again, it was totally random from a disc that had been stored away. It wasn't that old either at the time.

Is it hurting you??? Just ignore my comments if you don't like them and make your own mind up. I'm not stopping anyone from buying it!

I'd be happy with BD-R if they'd spend the extra money and use M-Discs

How cheap do Lionsgate BD-R releases get? If I can find it around $7 I'll be happy, otherwise I guess I'm going digital.

I just hope Shadow of the Vampire doesn't end up with the same treatment. I know there is a older German release but it looks sold out.

Part of the problem with BD-Rs is that they never seem to go on sale. I guess since there's no storage cost, it doesn't cost them anything if the disc doesn't sell for a year.

This.

That's the sort of extra care that would sway me.
