Always like seeing these older cartoons get this kind of treatment. I will be buying!

The success of these 1940s sets bodes well for them revisiting the earlier Popeye sets for a blu-ray upgrade. I mean, it certainly can't hurt, that's for sure.

If they do upgrade the 1930s sets, I hope that they rescan them. These new sets are all 4k scans and I doubt the DVDs are. But if they can scan 14 or 15 films for each set now, there's no reason they can't just do that with the 1930s ones again. Maybe rescans aren't needed, but I'd rather they did.

They started with the color shorts precisely because they had never been on home video ever before.

Given that the color short sets have sold well enough to get three discs out in less than a year, I'm sure we'll eventually see the B/W shorts.

The Popeyes go progressively South as the series continues. I'm not sure it's absolutely necessary to follow them all the way down. I would hope that Warner would finally do a blu-ray of the Superman series next. That is what really cries out for an upgrade from DVD.

The Max Fleischer Superman shorts I Love and have been mentioning here a few times. Just 17 shorts were made. They could all fit on 1 Bluray disc. C'mon WBArchive let's get it Done.

What does progressively south mean? Less racist?

The Superman cartoons were released on October 30, 2012 in a two-disc Blu-ray set entitled "MAX FLEISCHER'S SUPERMAN COLLECTOR'S EDITION". Gaiam Americas Inc. released it with a 24-page commemorative booklet as item 05-59275 and UPC 0 18713 59275 0.

Pay no attention to the circle on the spine that states "2 DVD SET". That's an obvious mistake!

All 17 cartoons had been released previously on June 7, 2011 as part of an 8-disc Blu-ray set named "The Superman Motion Picture Anthology 1978-2006". The set included all four Christopher Reeve movies along with "Superman Returns" and tons of extras.

Is this a serious post? Are you not aware that that is one of the worst releases in the history of Blu-ray and looks like absolute trash?

I know the quality isn't the best. It has the GAIAM logo throughout and some strange line artifacts in a lot of different scenes. However the colors are much more vibrant than they are in any of the various DVD sets released.

Now if it was possible to get a release with the quality of the recent Popeye color cartoons, that would be great. Does anyone know if the Superman cartoon negatives still exist?

The cartoons in the Superman box are SD, not HD, but they still look better than that blu-ray. Warner has the best element on these. The DVDs look great. A blu-ray off their film elements would be fantastic.

It is a shame that the Blu Ray release of that classic Superman was such a disappointment.

Last volume in the 1940s product line yes, anything past this will probably have the title of "The 1950s Volume _"

Just bad upscales of the warner cartoons by the looks of it with DVNR (no film grain is present), so it'd be cool for warner archive to redo those on an official blu-ray someday once the popeyes are done

The ones in the Superman boxset are the best version of the Superman shorts.

There were some gems in the 50s ones. And you don't need to just get bored watching it at normal speed. Pause, slo-mo, frame advance and more with all the sets (including if they do the 50s sets, yes), and you'll see how much Bluto feels for Olive Oyl.

It was Bluto's screen introduction in the Betty Boop pilot and it went all downhill from there...or was it Popeye?

Read this book and you'll never feel the same way about Famous Studios Popeye again!

I checked out the reviews of that book, and I got the impression I'd probably like it. I'd never heard of it before, but I like the fact it appears to be fairly comprehensive concerning all of the Famous Studios cartoons. I think I'll look around for the best deal I can find for it.

Growing up, I was most familiar with the Famous Studios cartoons. Originally, I'd spent my earliest years watching the late 50s-60s cartoons. When I was about 10 or so, I finally got a chance to watch the Famous Studios cartoons. They became my "new" favorites for a few years. It was about four or five years later when one of Chicago's local stations started showcasing one Fleischer cartoon at the end of their "Popeye Hour" daily. I was enthralled by the much "rawer" monochrome cartoons. They had something extra---an undefinable quality that appealed to me instantly. It was then that my love for the Fleischer cartoons began. They became my even "newer" favorites. To this day, I still consider them my all-time favorites with the Technicolor Fleischers holding a special place in my heart.

Despite the Fleischer cartoons taking my top spot, I never stopped liking the Famous Studios cartoons. How can anyone not like classic moments like Olive singing "If I Were President" and Popeye & Bluto singing "We're On Our Way to Rio"? I think the remakes of the cartoons where Popeye's nephews would rather play music than sleep and the one where Popeye and a little dog fight Bluto and his big dog both rival the original Fleischer versions both in animation and in the music played throughout. I've always enjoyed most of the Famous Studios cartoons, because they rarely failed to bring a smile to my face.

I'm looking forward to all three (hopefully) volumes of the 50s cartoons. I've thoroughly enjoyed the high quality of the 40s cartoons, and I hope the same care is given to all of the 50s cartoons also.
