I can't agree with The Thing. It's a cliffhanger, not abrupt at all, and hardly disappointing.

Neither is disappointing, great films. They just kind of end with no closure

I think the point is to leave the viewer guessing. I think The Thing pulls it off better though with the whole "Who is it?" ending. Halloween is just more like "Where'd he go?"

Tell me about it. 90% of a classic horror film, but the non-ending just deflates it.

I absolutely love the ending to the ending of that movie.

I love the ending of Burn After Reading. I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard at a non-ending. Completely anti-climactic, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I really liked "The Florida Project", but that ending threw me.

I'll buy that. I do really like the whole "what did we learn" ending to that movie. It's a meta moment for the Coen Bros. since a majority of their movies are about people getting in way over their heads. I still feel it ends unexpectedly.

As for what a previous poster said about The Fly, I agree. It's a very impactful ending, but I was still wondering what would happen next. I guess if you ignore the sequel then you would assume Ronnie goes back to the doctor and the Brundle legacy ends.

While we're on the subject, how about The Karate Kid for an abrupt ending? Basically Daniel wins, Mr. Miyagi nods in approval, fade to credits.

The remake of The Fly is really very good but no way in heck it could ever beat the original's ending. I count that as a top 5 ending of all time.

There was an unused epilogue filmed, but it ended up used as the OPENING scene of Karate Kid II!

Oh wow. When Kreese bloodies his fists on those poor car windows? I had no idea.

Much of the ending from the book is left out. I agree it feels abrupt.

Well, for one thing. a large majority of the audience never read the book. So, it's not particularly relevant to them if the movie covers everything. Also, a lot of that stuff wouldn't mean much since many of the things that acted as set-up from previous books wasn't covered in earlier films either.

I think a lot of fans of the books held the films to a standard that would have meant nothing to most of the audience. *shrug*

I didn't think the majority opinion made a difference to the thread. It was a beloved book and the Peter Jackson ending trimmed out about a hundred pages.

That ending is devastating. It's also an appropriate bookend to the film's opening which simply throws the viewer right into the narrative with minimal context. I love The Fly's pacing.

Dunno if you're familiar with it, but there was originally a different ending with Davis's character dreaming of her Brundlefly child turning into a butterfly while still in her womb. It's actually rather lovely, especially the music, but the effects are a little iffy.
