Oh, so this is the same mini-series that will be premiering on Netflix here in the U.S. next month. Looks good.

I couldn't help noticing the obligatory BBC balck quota in a story set in Europe before there was any African migration. That alone is too much suspension of disbelief for me to take it seriously/enjoy it.

That and there's no Van Helsing character in the cast of characters. I'd rather reread the book which, once again, will not be done justice in adaptation.

There's always one, isn't there?

There goes the neighbourhood eh?

I don’t believe there were vampires in Europe then or now. And yet I have enough suspension left to believe whatever the movie tells me over and above that fantastical conceit, if it pleases me.

Like their European equivalents, most British port cities had substantial black populations - by the end of the 18th Century an estimated 10,000 in London alone. Over a thousand served in the British armed forces. The numbers didn't grow in the 19th Century, but they don't appear to have declined either. in Dracula's Britain, the hub of an international trading empire, and a port like Whitby non-Caucasians wouldn't have raised any eyebrows.

Well, after reading the articles that Murray Futterman provided with the link in his post above, this "black quota" really seems to be a non-issue.

No Van Helsing? Well that could be an issue. But if the story is written well, regardless of how much it might stray from the book, this could be a great production. I'm not too familiar with the previous works of Matt Gatiss and Stephen Moffat, but trailer for this looks good. I'm glad it's a period piece instead of a modern day setting.

I will continue reading the reviews and try to catch it on Netflix before pre-order the blu-ray.

Looking at the brief synopsis for each episode, it appears that this 3-part series concludes before Van Helsing enters Stoker's original story; leaving open the possibility of future series.

Um, that means we are getting less than half of the book adapted, then, surely? Van Helsing is the one who diagnoses the cause of Lucy's ailment...

Yeah, we all know black people didn't exist in Europe until the slave trades.

Get off it.

This comment is even more ridiculous that we're talking about a show about... a vampire.

The pair of Moffat and Gatiss as a team is always enjoyable. I look forward to owning this along with my Sherlock Steel series. Wouldn't mind if they teamed up and created a new original series of 3 films per year forever maybe 3 or 4 seasons a show until the Apocalypse.

as long as it is well written and well acted, I really don't mind. It's a film about Imaginary Vampires so an alternative reality may have included earlier migration of ethnicity. I only get aggravated when EVERY show begins to be formulated with the same P.C. agendas to make everything the same. Period films that are not made up entertainment should accurately depict what once was for educational reasons. But this show is fine ...now when every show has 1 male and female from every nation on Earth and includes and throws in every minority religion, sexual preference, identification, and so on until all those shows blur together as one with no real plot then I will pitch a fit. Think of agendas in general as a Coke cola appearance in a film. It's there to advertise until it becomes a commercial then it's no longer a film but an annoyance.
...on a completely different note, I hope a Steelbook gets made

I'm Chilean. The day I see native Latin Americans in period European movies, I will agree with you. But then again, Latin Americans are not exotic enough to make white men feel better about themselves for being less racist. I guess you'd be equally fine with a white quota among a tribe of Zulu warriors.

With the information that was publicised before the broadcast, it would look that way.

However, having just watched episode one (and thoroughly enjoyed it),[/SPOILER
[Show spoiler]]episode two is set entirely on the Demeter travelling to England, leaving episode 3 to wrap everything else up. SPOILER]
.

The series is a very different take and taking a guess, I think this will be the only series.

Did you actually see this already? I wonder. You made this statement on 12/21/19. But it doesn't start until 01/01/20 in the UK and 01/04/20 in the US. You shouldn't make such comments without watching the entire mini-series. I don't think you did.

I enjoyed the first episode, some of the effects were terrible, some were decent, Dracula looks like he's from snooker circuit in the '70s. I was expecting him to chalk his fangs ...
