Look at the trend regarding Disney Star Wars grosses. Last Jedi took only ~65% of what Force Awakens managed and the backlash surrounding it helped kill Solo at the box office. The public (especially kids and teens) isn't particularly interested in Disney Star Wars and a significant millions of us fans won't be going to see episode 9 or buy it on home video. All these factors will effect the bottom line. Even with the inevitable promotional onslaught I'd be surprise if Rise of Skywalker breaks $1billion dollars, which for a main canon Star Wars film in 2020 will be pathetic.

The Skywalker Saga ended with episode 6. Unless of course Rey is a Skywalker (crikey who saw that coming, yawn)

Aside from your figure about the TLJ box office take vs. that of TFA, everything else you stated in bold is not just opinion but speculation, which you are entitled to but as Frank Dag stated, this is the last film in the Skywalker saga, ST - it will clear $1B worldwide.

Wait, if this is a Star Wars thread then why are people hating on Star Wars?

I honestly can't tell if you're joking or not. Not just with what I bolded, but the whole thing. Kids these days aren't interested in Star Wars? Haha, that's a good one.

I mean, do you even remember the theater releases of the prequel trilogy and how each one did? Phantom Menace had the most success while Revenge of the Sith did better than Attack of the Clones. I'm sure the same will apply here with this trilogy.

I'll be buying the movie no matter what, but the steelbook depends on the art. I loved the art for TLJ and thought Solo was passable but was very disappointed in the rest of them.

Will have to see the art first before deciding on this.

I'm in. TLJ was ok but I feel (or sense through the force) that this last entry will be good. JJ usually pulls things off pretty well.

Same here. This is one of the Steelbooks I know I'm getting. Besides the MCU and if there are amazing Steelbook deals I think I'm finally opting out of the Steelbook game.

I don’t care how early preorders go up. Earlier the better I say!
This will be mine.

Can’t wait for the inevitable 9-film mega set!

i thought the last jedi was probably the weakest movie in the series, i absolutely did not like it at all, it was a joke of a star wars movie and definitely did not deliver what the force awakens set up, Rian Johnson screwed up pretty badly, enough for me to boycott knives out which actually looks pretty decent.

having said that, its star wars, so i'll still be going, theyve got my money for the ticket and considering ive got the other steelbooks i'll probably end up with this one at somepoint too, albeit probably third party so that they dont make any extra money off of me.

Are you willing to make a bet? Poorly received by the public, possibly. Underperforming at the box office? LOL. I will buy you a steelbook of your choosing if this does poorly at the box office and you can buy me a copy of this steelbook if the reverse is true.

It ain't a Star Wars thread unless there's a user posting BS comments about how The Last Jedi is a terrible movie and that Rise of Skywalker will be a "failure" if it makes one billion dollars worldwide

An absurd statement for which you have absolutely no evidence or data. And all the people who post endlessly that they're not going to see the movie will be the first ones on line. They care so little about the movie that they spend all their spare moments telling everyone how bad it's going to be. You know what I post about movies I have no interest in? Absolutely nothing.

TROS is opening Christmas week. It's major competition is Frozen 2 (which opens a month earlier), Aeronauts, a Jumanji sequel and Spies in Disguise. It's going to do quite fine. And if it doesn't, it doesn't. No one should really care except the profit participants.

You act like $1 billion is a terrible number. In 1966, the entire Warner Bros. studio (including TV, Film and Records) sold for just $32 million ($250 million in 2019 dollars). People have gotten spoiled by insane grosses of the biggest films. But only a few films will ever achieve those numbers. It certainly wouldn't be surprise if the 11th Star Wars film didn't achieve one of those miraculous grosses. That doesn't mean it would be a failure.

Settle down people. Its simple, you like it you buy it, you don't like it, you don't buy it.

Hating on a movie is only going to create unnecessary arguments with each side having their own opinions. I'll be buying this movie irrespective because I want a complete Star Wars steelbook collection (i'm still waiting for the rest of the SW movies to be launched on 4K and you know there will be a steelbook boxset like avengers )

Your money, your decision.

I will absolutely buy this. Realistically regardless of movie quality. I already have the other 10 steelbooks, so will be getting this. I am excited about the movie though, already have tickets to 2 different showings.

Already have my opening day tickets and will preorder this as soon as i can! I do wish they had stuck with a scheme for these though. TFA matched the other releases well and then TLJ didn't. That being said, I do love the art for TLJ as a standalone product.
