I mostly prefer older films and a little over 75% of my collection are movies from the 80's and older. A lot of my discs from the last decade are things I blind bought for $5-$6. Sometimes you get gems like The Witch, Ex Machina or John Wick. Other times you get turkeys like Warcraft, Cure for Wellness, or The Possession. In any case it's hard to complain when it's about the same price it used to cost just to rent a movie at Blockbuster and it's a lot less hassle to toss that copy of The Possession into the trash can, than to have to drive back to the videostore store and return it.

I'm certainly very choosy on the music I buy and listen to. If I'm going to spend/waste time listening to something, it better be good. Better than good. It needs to be transformative. We only have so much time here and there is no sense in wasting it. So the same should go for movies too. To some extent anyway. As for buying habits, It's always a mix of both old and new. But the new better be something really fu--ing out of this world. At the very least a 4 star movie. In my mind anyway.
Yeah, I just don't get out of the house that much anymore, to be honest. My life basically consists of a daily walk to the grocery store and back, a weekly or so lunch with my uncle, and the very, very rare trip to the movie theater to see a double (or even sometimes a triple) feature. But the theater I like to go to is all the way across town, and although I usually enjoy my Uber trips it does get wearing sometimes.

And really, to be honest, when it comes down to what I buy I'm more of a collector than anything else. So if there's a director I really admire, for example, I will probably buy every Blu-ray available. Just as a matter of "principle" kind of. Someone like David Fincher or Terrence Malick, I'm going to buy every film that's on Blu-ray. It's like back when collected comics -- if I was reading someone's run a particular title, I was going 90%+ sure to stick with it all the way through.

Which, of course, is why I have way too many longboxes filled with comics down in the basement.

And buying a new film on Blu-ray usually just costs less than going to see it in the theater. I just need to get more organized.

So... this morning I learned how to make pie graphs with Excel

I tossed out the VHS years ago so this is DVD, Blu-Ray and iTunes:

If I set the chart to look only at the HD titles (which is what we normally watch):

I have a old CRT/VCR in a smaller "old school" room and love watching some of these older movies I grew up on in the same way I watched as a kid.
Oh, how I wished now I had kept those.

Nope, tossed them all. Gave a big pile to my buddy to bring to his camp for the kids and the rest hit the bin. Boxes and boxes.

Also tossed out all the cassettes and the tape deck, the VHS player, the DVD player and the CD changer.

Both, though probably weighed slightly towards older movies, any decade, I don't discriminate! If I like it or am pretty sure I will like it, I will buy it. There is always a new director, new kind of movie etc to explore, though of course I have my favourites e.g. most types of horror. The odd occasion I don't like something...I just sell it.

Definitely an 80's kid, films prior to then I get very picky about. It seems I only like talkies, nothing from the 1920's or older for me.

Primarily older.

The movies I grew up with at the theater were 1970 and up. When VHS became available for home purchase, I bought all my favorites from those times. When DVD supplanted VHS, I re-bought all my favorites again. When blu-ray supplanted DVD, I did the same but noticed a trend that many remained unwatched. I guess the thrill wasn't there as much after so many viewings of the same movies.

Over the last 10 years I discovered an interest in movies from the 1920's through 1960's. Watching something for the first time, across genre's that are not as prevalent today, became more interesting. Now out of 2000+ movies owned, I would say over 50% are now from pre-1970.

I too would have to agree that when I was upgrading from VHS to DVD it seemed like more of an event. Carefully looking out for when I could buy another favorite movie in a superior format. I had lists with street dates, where to get the best deal and so on. Then when Blu-ray came around I was rebuying films but it wasn't quite as exciting and I was not buying as many releases as I did on DVD.

I got 28 laserdiscs in the mail today. Does that answer your question?

Funnily enough, about 50% of my collection is titles that came out after I started buying BDs in (2011) - lots of random low-budget indie films that only cost me a few bucks, as well as just whatever came out in that time that I enjoyed - the rest is a mixture of mostly 80s/90/2000s with a scattering of 60s and 70s. Then again a lot of older titles are in multi-film box-sets which only count as one SKU when calculating those statistics.

Mostly 60s-80s. While there have been great movies produced in the last 20 years, there certainly aren’t enough of them to have them dominate my collection. And in the last 10 years, I could probably count on two hands the number of them I would ever want to own on blu ray.

The 70s was the most interesting and wild decade for filmmaking.

Born in ‘79, for what that’s worth.
