I’m surprised no one has mentioned Universal’s Halloween 2018. I’ll stick with the UHD from now on.

The original Blu-ray of American Psycho is the worst disc I own.

I actually like the slickness and lack of fine detail for that movie, really makes you remember the days of VHS. Gotta return some tapes.

That's really just an outdated master though, not an encode problem.

On paper but that transfer (Blade Runner 2007) is reference quality. It definitely was until surpassed by the UHD. I never saw encoding issues at all on that disc.

Even the UHD was disappointing. Not problematic but it was simply underwhelming compared to what I see in the theater.

Re:Zero from FUNimation and Castlevania Season 1 from Viz. They are so bad they look worse than their official streams.

Re:Zero screencaps

Castlevania screencaps

Re:Zero has probably the worst compression for a digitally produced work.

There are worse Criterion encodings. The worst examples I've seen are probably The Rose and My Own Private Idaho. MD gets the extra attention because it's so popular.

Black Christmas from Sommerville House. 15 Mbps used quite poorly on a very grainy old film.

And Amityville: The Awakening. 13.6 Mbps for a movie under 90 minutes with virtually no extras? Just why? A bit blocky and banding everywhere.

Criterion have a nasty habit of trying to stuff too much onto a single disc. Tess is almost a 3 hour movie with almost 4 hours of HD bonus material all crammed onto a single BD-50. Even if it still looks good I can't fathom why on earth they would not put 4 hours of bonus content onto a separate discs to give the 171 minute movie a little more room to breath. The Criterion disc has a 18658 kbps bitrate for the video encode while the BFI disc is 29927 kbps.

Saves them money. Also, sometimes they make it so that a 2 disc release is more expensive than a single even if the second disc only has extras, sometimes they do the opposite (same price).

Roma is 135 min, has an Atmos track, and surely has lengthy extras, yet is all on one disc. War and Peace is over 7 hours and was put on just two discs.

The new Apocalypse Now blu-rays are terrible. Especially Theatrical and Redux. Borderline unwatchable on a larger TV or projector.

The Australian BD of the Scottish horror movie "Gnaw". It's an unmitigated disaster that makes ANY disc listed here look like a Sony UHD.

^ That looks like it would be more suited to come under the category of bad movie instead of bad encoding.

I agree with you on cramming too much on a single disc. However, in the case of Tess the Criterion disc actually has superior PQ because the UK disc is entirely too bright. There's way too many blown out highlights.

I think the Fox BD for Star Wars (A New Hope) has some parts badly encoded. Look at the begining of the movie where the droids get to Tatooine on the desert, there's plenty of mosquito noise around the droids and also the sky is clumsily encoded with some artifacting.
