The sound isn't upgraded. The Turbine 5.1 mix is significantly poorer than the original 2 channel Dolby Surround track. It sounds like they just "sweetened" the original soundtrack and messed up the balances in the process. However the image quality on the German is a definite step up from the Australian disc, with better black levels and overall color contrast. I have both of them and have compared.

I was aware of the source material, it's just sad it takes you out of the experience due to the actual film scan being really well made. |

Fair enough, but you said it immediately on the heels of referencing the Turbine release, so it read like a criticism of their release specifically.

It doesn't include those mixes from Turbine's limited edition, no. It's Stereo PCM and Surround DTS HD-MA. |

I have heard a bit of the German version in Auro 3D and it sounded excellent.

I have the German disc and neither of the remixes are as good as the regular Dolby Surround channel. The remixes seem to be slathered in reverb and have weird upper mid frequency imbalances. I don't think they were mixing from a multichannel master. I think they were just sweetening the existing Dolby Surround track.
The stereo on this film is encoded to decode to surround using Dolby PL. The 5.1 track on this release is probably just the Dolby unfolded. |

I have the Japanese Blu-ray. I presume it's the same source that was used for the German disc and forthcoming UK release. The surround remixes are all up-mixes of the Dolby surround mix. Presumably the multi-tracks are in Prince's vault so there will probably be a fully sanctioned reissue from the estate at some point. Other tracks were filmed for inclusion as well but were cut.

I have a feeling this is licensed from FilmRise, who owns this title from the Alliance Atlantis/Cineplex Odeon Films (US distributor) catalog. As US rights are with them (being it's on Amazon Prime Video US with the Filmrise logo), and MVD has a deal with Filmrise I suspect a US Blu coming from them in the future.

Except it isn't a "concert movie".
The audio is a mix of tracks recorded at three different dates and overdubbed in the studio, and 98% of the video is a recreation of a concert at Paisley Park, i.e. Prince & band miming to a prerecorded tape. The only real concert footage are the short, grainy scenes where it is clear they're in a real concert hall with thousands of attendees and not a handful of Minneapolis locals watching Prince & band mime to a tape. But the actual concert footage was way too grainy and badly lit to be usable, hence the recreation. |

The announcement of the barebones UK release was already done shortly after the news of the Turbine release broke.
