They also used a 70mm print from the 2000 restoration approved by Robert Wise as colour reference for the timing of that new interpositive.
If using filmstock approved by Robert Wise as colour reference, the 2010 interpositive may have a different color than the final 4K outcome.

As far as I can see "the Sound of Music" has been removed from several streaming services including Disney and Itunes, could this be an indication that "something" is going on with the movie?

Hopefully, they'll do something like with Avatar and give it a wide theatrical rerelease.

It appears that Disney/20th Century Studios likely lost the distribution rights to the movie, which had to be renewed regularly and appear to have reverted to the Rodgers & Hammerstein company.

There's more discussion in the Blu-Ray thread for the film:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...255556&page=22

It looks like Disney also lost The King and I, Oklahoma and South Pacific.

There's no official confirmation yet, but all the signs are there.

Just to clarify, Fox STILL owns the film itself for perpetuity, it's the distribution rights they sadly might've lost.

All I can say is I hope they'll reconsider and renew because I can't bear to have Fox lose one of their classic titles.

Good point, I edited my post.

Disney/Twentieth Century still owns the film itself, they just don't seem to have the legal right to exhibit it anymore.

A deluxe edition of the OST was announced.
http://theseconddisc.com/2023/09/27/...xe-soundtrack/

Not sure if this means anything for the film itself, but you never know.

It could possibly be part of the preparation for releasing the film itself in a newly restored 4K version!
I hope it is.

The rights to the soundtrack album are entirely separate from the rights to the movie.

The expanded soundtrack album was possible because the rights to the soundtrack album reverted from Sony (which inherited them from RCA Victor) back to R&H.

Mike Matessino described this in detail at the filmscoremonthly board.

The Deluxe Edition of the soundtrack was put up for pre-order on Amazon today: https://www.amazon.com/Original-Soundtrack-Recording-Deluxe-Blu-ray/dp/B0CK1BR7PD

Interestingly, the soundtrack on the audio blu-ray is being released not only in regular stereo, but also in Dolby Atmos. Could this mean that a 4K release or at least a remastered blu-ray is in the works?

This movie was a Christmas time tradition when I was growing up. "The Wizard of Oz" and "The Sound of Music" were broadcast once a year around this time. I'm surprised there's not a 4k disc yet.

March 4 is the 60th anniversary and still nothing from Disney. Think of all the great films this company is by-passing. Missed their chance for a 60th Anniversary 4k of Mary Poppins last year too. I just hate their home video department.

Having the SOTM properly transferred/mastered in native 4K in my collection is one of the milestones to completing my movie library (also true for Marry Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Ben-Hur). If Criterion or someone could manage even just a blu-ray of Enchanted April, I'd then be set. Always a frustration when your favorite films, for whatever reason, seem to simply drop off the radar of a proper disc release.

I watched The Sound of Music on Disney Plus recently, and even though the HD stream looked good, I'm definitely holding out for a 4K disc release too. The color palette on the Blu-ray always felt off to me compared with older versions I've seen, especially during outdoor scenes the colors just never popped the way I remembered.

Sound-wise, I do miss those extra details at the top end that got lost when they cleaned up the tape hiss, like certain background instruments. It’d be awesome if they’d finally fix those things in a 4K release.

When I'm trying to recreate retro music or experiment with film-inspired soundtracks for video projects, I sometimes use an ai song maker to generate new tracks. This sort of tool can be handy if you want music vibes similar to classic movies but tweaked your own way.
