I just joked because if you look closely, both characters were clearly designed to look almost like McDermott and Page.

Yeah... Ellen Page complained at the time the game came out, saying they ripped off her likeness and it wasn't appreciated (it came out very close to another game that she actually acted in and provided her likeness for), so... I doubt she'll be anywhere near this project.

They have confirmed the series covers the events of the original game and possibly some further stuff (potentially from Pt. II)

People get way too hung up on thinking of actors who look like a part, rather than ones who would fit the performance best. I'd like to see a new interpretation of the characters by interesting actors, otherwise I could just watch a Let's Play of the game on YouTube.

I'm down for an adaptation of the game, but I feel Hollywood has really cannibalized "The Last of Us" over the years. I guess it wasn't a wholly original property in the first place (basically "The Road" with mutants/zombies and more action). "A Quiet Place" is essentially a clicker movie. "Logan" has the same dynamic with Joel/Ellie and Logan/X-23. "Annihilation" has those weird mutants. "Leave No Trace" has the same sort of look. Not to mention all of "The Walking Dead". "The Last of Us" will just feel tiresome at this point.

Not sure about the casting. I did think of Hugh Jackman a few years ago, but he's already done this with "Logan". I thought Kaitlyn Dever would make a great Ellie back when she was on "Justified", but she's too old now.

The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials really cribbed heavily from Last of Us as well, the director admits it.

'Chernobyl' Director Johan Renck to Helm 'The Last of Us' HBO Pilot

The writer and creative director of the game, Neil Druckmann, will work with Mazin to pen and executive produce the series.

Johan Renck — the Emmy-winning director behind miniseries Chernobyl — will re-team with HBO and Craig Mazin to direct the pilot of the series adaptation of popular Naughty Dog video game The Last of Us.

Sony and Naughty Dog's The Last of Us, which bowed in 2013, garnered critical praise for its engrossing tale of the post-apocalypse, centering on the relationship between Joel, a smuggler in this new world, and Ellie, a teenager who may be key to a cure for a deadly pandemic. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle the 14-year-old girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey as they traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

The writer and creative director of the game, Neil Druckmann, will work with Mazin to pen and executive produce the series.

Carolyn Strauss will also executive produce along with Renck and Evan Wells, president of Naughty Dog, the Santa Monica-based developer of the game. The project is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television in association with PlayStation Productions. It will be the first television series from PlayStation Productions.

Prior to Chernobyl, Renck was a veteran tv director, with credits Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Halt and Catch Fire and Bates Motel, among others. He is repped by CAA, Anonymous Content, the U.K.'s Casarotto Ramsay and Sloane Offer.
