what we got here in the glorious remastered Blu is:
picture cropped: from an 1.78 formatted print, which was matted to 1.85, then again cropped print to 1.78. Picture loss on all four sides. end song digitally replaced and new explosion effects BUM BUM BUM added. (Cantonese only, Mandarin has original audio there, Canto song also) a somewhat nasty looking yellow tint. all this compared to the HK Blu, which had the original mono Cantonese buried inside the True HD 5.1 crap. |

Just compared the Vinegar Syndrome BD to the remastered Mei Ah DVD from 2008. Also switched a bit back and forth between the Cantonese and the Mandarin tracks on the BD.
1. No cropping per se on the BD but just a different framing. Sometimes the BD shows less information, sometimes it shows more than the DVD. 2. I could not discover any new explosions or other audio effects added on the Cantonese track. It just generally sounds way more muffled than the Mandarin track. 3. No replaced end song (again: it just sounds way more muffled on the Cantones track than on the Mandarin track). 4. There is no consitent yellow tint. The BD is generally way darker than the DVD (which was too bright) and has different filters applied in different scenes. Sometimes yellow, sometimes blue. 2.) get your ears fixed 3.) get your ears fixed so be a happy boy (or girl, whatever you desire) now and be happy with the super awesome VS perfect version. To each his own. |

I wonder if Radiance will be using the same transfer as VS and have the same cropping issue.

HK BD definitely shows more picture information on all sides, but the colors and shadow detail are much better on VS BD.

The Radiance films release uses the same cropped master as the VS, but restored the original audio at the ending (correct foley, song in mono).

I can live with a master that is a bit cropped (left side is cropped the most). The complete original audio is there so that's a partial improvement to the Kani release.

I got the Radiance release this week. Some of you will probably notice some macroblocking in My Heart is That Eternal Rose even though Fidelity worked on it. This occurs during a scene where a location is completely bathed in red light and the grain structure briefly collapses. I’d bet the same is true for the US disc and maybe that blockiness is even in the master itself, which wouldn’t be the first time this has happened. Other than that, gorgeous presentation and the encode is fantastic.
I have a feeling Mei Ah avoided DNR here because Patrick Tam didn’t supervise the remastering, unlike Nomad. I guess we got lucky. |

A new 4K restored version of this film is going to have its premiere at this year’s Hong Kong Film Festival.

Now I'm on the fence. Radiance LE is going oop, but if there's a chance of a 4K disc I can wait... |

I think your better bet is to go for radiance. Movie is decent but as with 2 recent and 1 older BR disc it has received so far would think it will not get UHD release for some years.

I'm glad Radiance included the trailer for the movie. I am slightly disappointed in the "Director's Cut" for Nomad. Still things missing and a lot of unnecessary small cuts here and there. I can only hope someone releases the workprint version that I had seen 25 years ago on VHS tape.
