What I bolded - the actual genre hook - should be at the forefront, with the casting and other elements filling in the details as you watch. Draw people in with the genre then work in the social commentary. Nowadays they put the cart before the horse on all these press releases (and often the shows/movies themselves) and it just feels so forced and patronizing.

I never loved the original films and I definitely wouldn't be interested in this series version.

It does sound like something that would have been on The Disney Channel 20-25 years ago. So maybe young teens will like it.

If they decided that the characters were diverse before even writing the script, then by definition the diversity is voluntary rather than forced.

You keep telling yourself that. I'm sick of the idiocy of these studios.

How it should be done:
- Write your script
- Either have a casting call, or have your casting director find a selection of people to read for the part, regardless of race/gender*
- Hire the best person for the role

How it should not be done:
- Decide ahead of time to have a "diversity hire"

*unless the role requires it (biopic, cultural significance of character, historical accuracy)

What's worse, I wonder: screenwriters who pick friends for their characters from each ethnicity that's commercially and politically viable for them... or believing that any sane human animal does that in real life?

I don't want to know the answer to either, but that question terrifies me.

I unironically would be okay with this casting to be honest.

And as a straight white male, I also do not give a rat's ass as to hires, if it's forced diversity or not. Just give me good content

Unless you're able to do, it really isn't the best idea to try and attempt to teach.
