hahaha I love the portable blu and hd-dvd threads...there's always 4 or 5 people who can't imagine why you would want to watch your $40 blu ray movie ANYWHERE but the comfort of your livingroom.
I do the majority (like, 99%) of my movie watching at work; I have a portable DVD player set up right next to my monitors, and I play movies on that so it doesn't use any of my system resources or screen realestate. Now...If I'm going to be buying blu movies, you better damn well believe I want to be watching them on my portable at work AS WELL AS on my giant 1080p livingroom tv with surround sound. Yeah, I won't get to appreciate the full 1920x1080 pixels on my 7-10inch screen, but it beats the hell out of watching the psp version on a 4 inch screen doesn't it? And no, there won't ever be any blu ray discs sporting a burnable dvd version of their movie (do I really need to get into why?) so a portable blu ray player is an inevitability. just a matter of when (probably not any time soon, looking at the market share and the struggling players out there already) and how much (I remember back when portable dvd players were $1000+, so...I wouldn't expect much different when they first portablu's come out). but here's for hoping ![]() |

Its been discussed that blu-ray disc COULD do as HDDVD has done and be playable on both BLURAY drives, and SDDVD drives.
It would make since to me if they started releasing all new Blu ray movies in this way, and cut out all SDDVD production, sincd SDDVD's are virtually free anymore bairly costing a few dollars, it would increase profits for the production studios, and would begin to merge everyone into the Blu ray technology, so when their SDDVD player dies, and Blu ray player prices fall, they will just move into blu ray, and already have a blu ray collection with out having to start over. This would also solve the problem of being able to use you blurays on a portable DVD or in-car dvd drive, with out the need to make/buy a very expensive portablu player. Just my $0.02 -TheChad |

Won't work any better for BD than it has for HD DVD. The failure and glitch rate is too high, setting up production lines for a new hybrid format would be massively expensive, and there is no way on this earth that it is even possible to get enough production capacity for a single popular title in a hybrid format. Why do you think HD DVD hasn't been doing this? Toshiba bullied Paramount into trying this out on the Star Trek: TOS set. The results pretty much insured that this is not going to be a regular occurance.
Top titles sell millions of copies. After well over a year of gearing up and setting up new production lines, there is barely enough capacity for HD DVD to do runs of a couple hundred thousand. The extra cost would mean a large markup since there is no way the BDA members would agree to absorb the cost difference as Toshiba has done. It just isn't even feasible. Chris Quote:

I really wish that a Portable Blu-Ray would come out. My mother promised all of "the kids" that whomever has the first grandchild would be a given a "portable DVD" because they are so great for kids.
Looks like my wife and I are going to win that particular sweepstakes... but I stopped buying DVDS! I'm only buying Blu-Ray discs these days... and I'm definitely not going to by movies twice over. Of course, with the backlog of DVDs that I own and haven't watched... we have plenty of material, but I don't know that a young child is going to want to sit through A.I. or Million Dollar Baby! ![]() |
