I think Arrow's two disc release of Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia takes a lot of beating:
•Brand new 4K restoration from the original camera negative produced by Arrow Films exclusively for this release •Original 1.0 mono audio •Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing •Brand new audio commentary by Stephen Prince, author of Savage Cinema: Sam Peckinpah and the Rise of Ultraviolent Movies, recorded exclusively for this release •Audio commentary by Sam Peckinpah scholars Paul Seydor, Garner Simmons and David Weddle, moderated by Nick Redman •Sam Peckinpah: Man of Iron, Paul Joyce s feature-length 1993 documentary featuring interviews with James Coburn, Kris Kristofferson, Monte Hellman, Ali MacGraw, James Robards and others, available on home video in the UK for the first time ever •The John Player Lecture: Sam Peckinpah, audio recording of the director s on-stage appearance at the National Film Theatre •Four songs by Kris Kristofferson, filmed during the making of Man of Iron •Theatrical trailer •Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Peter Strain •Extensive collector s booklet containing new writing by Alexandra Heller-Nicholas and numerous reprints including interviews and more [Limited Edition exclusive] LIMITED-EDITION BONUS BLU-RAY Sam Peckinpah: Man of Iron The Director s Cut A brand-new, extended version of Paul Joyce s documentary, containing more than TEN HOURS of previously unseen interview footage, featuring actors RG Armstrong, James Coburn, LQ Jones, Kris Kristofferson, Ali MacGraw and Jason Robards, director Monte Hellman, producers Michael Deeley and Daniel Melnick, writers Alan Sharp and Jim Silke, writer-producer Gordon Dawson, assistant Katherine Haber, editor Garth Craven, satirist Mort Sahl, property master Bob Visciglia, bar owner Tom Runyon and cousin Bob Peckinpah, plus newly-shot interviews with Joyce, Haber and actor David Warner. |

Alfredo Garcia is one of my all-time favourite films. I own five different BD editions, as well as several DVDs. And while the Arrow edition is the best overall, it is still missing many fine extras found elsewhere: documentaries by Mike Siegel and Garner Simmons, commentaries featuring Katy Haber and Gordon T. Dawson, etc. For that reason alone, simply because it isn’t truly comprehensive, the Arrow edition doesn’t get my vote in this thread.

The steel-book of Forbidden Planet is still so very aesthetically pleasing to me & contains a hell of a lot on the background to this extraordinary film. Someone in the design team obviously loved their 1950's tin sci-fi toys.

There's several I could go with:
Arrow's Oldboy has insane bang for your buck. A Fidelity in Motion encode, like 4 commentary tracks, like 10 hours of extras, and a feature length retrospective documentary all in a normal 2 disc release. (I have their Oldboy box set, but for here, I'm doing the Oldboy contents) Arrow's RoboCop also deserves mention, as well as The Thing and Carrie, titles I'm sure will be mentioned many times over. Criterion's Barry Lyndon release is phenomenal. Having a breathtaking 4K restoration with the original Mono audio in the original 1.66:1 aspect ratio is hypnotic with John Alcott's legendary cinematography (the best in any film I've ever seen). There have been some amazing Hong Kong film releases in the UK from Eureka and 88 Films, so I'll choose my favourite from each of the great labels; From Eureka, Wheels on Meals is a truly amazing set. The David Mackenzie encode, the multiple audio options, and the lengthy and extensive extras make for one of the best HK cinema releases in the west. I would put Police Story 1&2 on such a level as well, but since it's two films, that won't count. From 88 Films, it HAS to be Dragons Forever. 3 cuts of the film all lovingly restored in 4K with pretty good encoding, tons of audio options, and exceptional extras make it one of the most complete releases out there. For 4K? It's gotta be Apocalypse Now. All 3 cuts in 4K, perfect encoding, and an absolutely insane set of extras, including the remarkable documentary "Hearts of Darkness." Other than the 1080p copies of the films having atrocious compression, and the sh*tty digipak packaging (I hate Digipaks so much), it's probably the best, most complete release of any film on any format I own. |

Watched this classic yesterday morning for the very first time. Then spent most the day watching the extras, which there is a lot.
You get docs on the making of the film, the history of Technicolor, various featurettes, several Loony Tune cartoons and much more. The actual 1938 film looks stunning in glorious Technicolor. Currently available in the HMV 2 for £15 offer. RIP: Olivia de Havilland (Maid Marian) who died last week aged 104. ![]() |
