From wikipedia

Quote:
The film garnered further controversy for its use of what Mou claims to be actual autopsy footage of a young boy and also for a scene in which a live cat appears to be thrown into a room to be eaten alive by hundreds of frenzied rats.[6] Although in the 2010 documentary Black Sunshine: Conversations With T.F. Mou, Mou stated that the cat was tired after participation in the film and the cat got two fish as a reward, that the cat was made wet with honey, and that the rats were licking and eating the honey only.
I think I'll pass

the movie is on youtube btw, probably censored, but it would give a good idea if it's something one would enjoy

the cat scene has been criticized as being extreme, but it's the autopsy scene, while re-enacted is still vomit inducing.

Wouldn't want to see that stuff again on VHS let alone 4k knowing how the "F/X" were made...

Yeah, I barely remember the cat scene but this one is burned in my memory. As is the vacuum chamber scene and the frozen arms scene.

I'm really surprised this is coming out on UHD, proceed with caution not for the squeamish.

Let's not forget that BFI literally started their Blu-ray line with Salò back in 2008:

And it sold out and got a dual format re-issue in 2011:

And it was and re-issued with a new master and new extras as a 2-disc Blu-ray set in 2019:

I own two of these three releases (as well as the Criterion Blu-ray) and I will be getting the film again should it be released as a UHD Blu-ray.

As for Men Behind the Sun, I've not seen it, but as I am a "dog person" and not a "cat person" I will probably get it, just to support another label putting out UHD Blu-ray titles.

It's incredible that a little company like Massacre is releasing an UHD.

Although if what is said about the "autopsy scene" and the "cat scene" is true, then it says a lot about this country (and the world, really) that this is okay on UHD Blu-ray but no one will release pornography. Even as thousands of hours of 4K videos exist, UHD Blu-ray might be the first physical home video format with no pornographic titles at all (the three, edited softcore titles from Intimatefilm in Germany don't count) and yet, it will have Men Behind the Sun.

Have a good, long think about that.

If the unrated theatrical cut of Caligula doesn't receive a UHD release, then I'm boycottin' the format.

The cat didn't really get hurt, at least that's what I've read. I was more shocked by the frozen arms scene. Either way, I'm definitely picking this up, hopefully a blu-ray is included as well.

Well, we wanted 'catalogue titles' in UHD...

Amazing to see this grubby, infamous film getting the Royal Treatment ahead of so many others.

I have the 2-DVD Tokyo Shock set of the uncut film from years back; what I am really wondering about is extras.

The "TS" set has, on the second DVD, a documentary called "Kizu" (wound) which includes sit-down interviews with surviving camp personnel from Unit 731. This gives the set some re-watch value, but whether the doc is available for the UHD release...who knows?

What's next? "I Spit on your Grave"? "A Serbian Film"?...

C.

yeah this shook me haha
in my mind this movie is not one I ever thought would be released on UHD
it taken this long to get it upgraded from DVD!
I dont remember the cat scene but I am a cat lover so I hope they did not lie about the cat not getting hurt! The animal cruelty in the cannibal films was un-disputable.

I do remember the autopsy and frozen hands scene though!
I will probably get this.

So a movie with an actual autopsy and extreme torture, yet people are traumatized by a cat that wasn’t even harmed?

Is the scene really that bad?

Mous has said that the cat killed within the movie by a rat swarm was not actually killed but a blog post from China appeared in 2008 stating that the rats and cat were killed on set.

We'll never know for sure but I don't think animal welfare was their priority, needless to say it's not the kind of movie you watch while eating dinner...

Neither was the turtle in Cannibal Holocaust but it's already done so at this point, why is it an issue?

I still can't watch the coati scene on Cannibal Holocaust. It's that traumatizing to me. It's been over ten years since I saw Men Behind the Sun, though. I don’t remember being shocked by the cat scene, but seeing it on HD instead of a DVD rip on my laptop might make a difference.

yeah I am a animal lover especially cats!
the blood on the cat did seem fake from the pictures I just looked up so who knows who telling the truth...I hope it was fake!

I also not been able to see any of the animal killings in CH.
Only time I skipped scenes in a movie its clearly real those scenes and you can tell.
