That’s actually not true. I thought that for the longest time as well but Steven E. de Souza who worked on Commando, Die Hard and the aborted Commando 2 project dismissed that as internet rumour.

Avenging Force with Michael Dudikoff. It was originally intended to be a sequel to Invasion USA, with Chuck Norris reprising his role as Matt Hunter. When Norris decided not to return, direct references were removed and Hunter's daughter was rewritten to be a little sister, rendering it a standalone movie even though Dudikoff's character is still named Matt Hunter.

Die Hard was very briefly considered as a direct sequel to Commando but Lloyd Levin immediately shot the idea down and it was always developed as a standalone (Fox picked up the novel in the mid-70s as a possible Towering Inferno sequel after Roderick Thorp pitched it as basically Inferno with added gunmen): after one of Murdoch's papers ran a story about Arnie's dad's Nazi past he refused to do it (as a non-Commando sequel) or Predator 2. The novel used as a source for Die Hard 2 (Walter Wager's 56 Minutes) was something Fox picked up in 1987 and also briefly considered as a potential Commando sequel. Just to add to the mix, Steven De Souza's actual script for Commando 2 had nothing to do with either book.

It seems its original source is a throwaway comment in an 80s victory lap interview with either Lawrence Gordon or Lloyd Levin, who said that at a regular development meeting Fox asked if there were any properties in development that could be quickly reworked as a Commando sequel and because it had been in development Hell for years it was one of dozens of projects raised, but was immediately rejected because Levin thought it had more potential as a standalone. It was probably discussed for no more than five minutes. Of such molehills are mythical mountains born.

A few others based on the fact that they are adapted from connected novels by Donald Westlake are The Hot Rock, Bank Shot, Jimmy the Kid, Why Me? & What's the Worst that Could Happen?; as well as Point Blank, The Outfit, The Split, Parker, etc. |

Finally seen Rumor Has It..., which is strangely "connected" to Dustin Hoffman's The Graduate. It's not a sequel per se, it's more like an alternative universe where The Graduate is loosely based on a "true story" and how the "real-life" people deal with what happened decades later.
This is a weird movie. None of the characters are relatable at all. There is adultery and incest, and they just expect us to feel emotion towards these characters by the end. But in the back in my head I was like, you all need help. You can get away with unlikeable characters in a movie, but you have to treat it like a straight up comedy or directed and write it better. The Rescuers was almost an indirect sequel to 101 Dalmatians. Cruella de Vil was going to be the villain but she was changed to the new character Madame Medusa. Medusa still drives Cruella’s famous car though and in the same maniac fashion in one scene.
