Smiley's People has been restored from a mixture of 16mm A & B roll original negatives, Colour Reversal Internegative (CRI) and Interpositive (IP). The image quality varies across all three formats with the original negative being the best source available.

Where the negatives were not available the CRI and IP masters were used to cover the missing shots.

Each format contained multiple film related artefacts such as softer images and colour and density fluctuations which became amplified on formats that are not the original negatives.

Thousands of instances of film dirt have been removed and each shot has been stabilised, colour corrected and sharpened where needed for consistency.

These new episodes have been reframed and exported as new High Definition masters.

Yes, there is a similar amount of noise reduction as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Day of the Triffids and Edge of Darkness. These titles were all restored by The Ark Restoration:http://thearkrestoration.com/

I think the underlying restorations are probably ok, but then they add way too much DNR to the final product, leaving the “grain”, if you could call it that, looking very digital and weird. Their colour timing is also not very good at times either IMO.

Hmmm. Missed this announcement. I'm a fan of the Smiley-verse. But BBC's release of TTSS was a bit of a DNR mess. It's pretty costly to import this to the US at the moment, may wait on this.

The US version was very heavily edited though and is missing a lot of material. Most of the missing scenes are included in the deleted scenes on the Acorn release but these are not in HD so the new UK release is the one to get.

I'd like to know this as well. I've plenty of discs that are marked Region B without actually being region locked, and if this is one of them it's an instant purchase for me! (I have the same question for TTSS, but my hope is that if one is not region locked, then the other is the same.)

It’s locked to Region B. It doesn’t play on my Region A setting.

When they fixed Tinker did they roll out the corrected discs to retailers? For example if u were to order from amazon.co.uk would it be safe to get the corrected discs?

They are, though some items are locked for US shipping. Unfortunately, I believe it's something like $10 shipping per item to the US.

I got Tinker near release date from amazon, and when sent bbc an email with proof of purchase, was mailed a replacement disk. Recently somebody buying from ebay didn't get sent a replacement because won't accept proof of purchase for some reason. Would expect amazon to have the corrected stock by now.

By the way, the parts of disk without subtitles wasn't exactly important for plot. Mostly small-talk with taxi driver

Just got a copy from amazon.co.uk and it had no subtitles. Am i right in thinking the bits that should be subtitled are the border guard scene and the scene just before the ambush in the first episode?

Wow! Are they at least allowing to combine items to keep the cost down? I ask because we may be moving back to NY next year from Europe.

It appears there is a slight discount if you buy more.

[Show spoiler]To ship 1 item to the US, it costs £6.96 (~$9.21 under current exchange rates per Google) for "standard delivery" and £11.55 (~$15.28) for "AmazonGlobal Standard".

Upping the order to 4 items removes the "standard delivery" option and the cheapest option is £21.12 (~$27.93, roughly $7 per item) for "AmazonGlobal Standard"

For 6 items, that increases to £27.50 (~$36.37, roughly $6 per item).

There is a third shipping option "AmazonGlobal Priority", and it's about £2-3 more per configuration for quicker delivery.
