I know this is a year old post but This is identical to my situation. I never dreamed Id have to invest in cleaning supplies for brand new factory sealed items. Anyone come up with a scratch free cloth? I have never had to wipe a disc before but I have at least 100 never used brand new 4ks that need cleaning.

Any microfiber cloth is suitable for cleaning DVDs, blu-rays, 4K discs and CDs as well. Your movies shouldn't be that dirty and soiled that you would need a cleaning solution and if so, just use a dab of tab water, then wipe the disc from the hub to the edge all around. Never wipe in a circular motion.

That's the critical part, right there!

Ok sounds good. I know I got some before at Target and they were thicker and used them to clean my glass tv stands ect and it left little fibers everywhere so I figured maybe there was another kind that doesn't leave those behind. Most of my discs are either that oil from the factory case or fingerprints from packaging discs by hand I assume. I will try to find a good microfiber. I hear the silk type are the best? Like for glasses, was looking online and I bet the ones that are used for professional cameras would be a pretty safe bet as they are made for delicate optical lenses. Thanks for the input. I do know about center hub to outer side in a straight line and no circular wipe. Thanks again for the input.

For regular cleaning a microfiber cloth.
For more intense cleaning 70~90% isoproyl alcohol.

Sorry for necrothreading but, unfortunately, I have come accross a scrachted disc in my collection, too. Black Hawk Down, purchased like two years ago and just opened it. Played it back and parts of the movie got skipped, sometimes for minutes the picture was frozen. Pity. Mind you, I bought it brand new, from Amazon. Obviously, I can't return it now, so is there a way to fix that 3 inch long scratch?

" Then I used warm water and dish soap after a quick online search, and then used a microfiber cloth, but that left tons of little micro scratches on the laser side!"

Microfiber and then if needed, hand dishwashing detergent.
Never scratched mine. You can use a hand air blower first just in case maybe you have sand all over somehow? Make sure microfiber cloth has only been used on reasonable surfaces before, like not things covered with sand or grit.

Although some say hard coarse sandpaper covered in diamond dust works best of all.

4K discs are more sensitive to scratches that may cause defects than Blu-rays. If the scratch is 3 inches long you may have to rebuy the movie because, there's no way to repair it, besides returning it which you can't do now. This is why people should open their brand new 4K and Blu-ray movies (even though they're not ready to watch them at the moment) to inspect for scratches or any other noticeable defects on the disc(s).

I wonder why they couldn’t make these as resilient as Blu-ray Discs…can these not be resurfaced by sanding and polishing like PlayStation games?

I'm not a gamer, so I don't how PlayStation disc are repaired when they're scratched, and what materials they' are made of, whether if they're the same as 4K discs or not. Since the movie is already defective, it wouldn't hurt to try it, but I would think by using a abrasive pad on the disc that's delicate would do more damage, and make it worse. DVDs can be buffed, but not Blu-rays and possible 4K UHD Discs as well because they're more sensitive.

I don’t know how much the machine cost but a local game shop near my home has what looks like a short fatter version of a coffee grinder… for $4.00 a disc, the owner places in a disc shaped piece and then the PlayStation or Xbox game and closes the lid, it spins and hums for about a min, then she takes it out changes a piece and puts it back in for about a min, removes and pats dry with a cloth. I remember she said you could do the process a couple of times to a game and it would work unless it was badly damaged. The finished discs always played fine but was slightly duller in appearance physically, like the mirror quality shine not the gave visuals.

All my discs are in perfect condition but if someone would like to mail Me a nonfunctional UHD, I would be happy to take it to her and have her give it a go and mail it back…or trash it if it fails. Next time I drive by if I remember I’ll stop in and ask what brand of machine it is.

(Edit) just the once for one person, as a test.lol…don’t wanna make a career of it
(2nd edit) I hit up Amazon and a listing comes up for a JfJ Easy Pro Disc Repair machine. It services Video Game Discs, CD, DVD, and Blu-rays… unfortunately it’s $199.00 and looks like a white paper shredder in size and shape with what appears to be the same inner workings as the Coffee grinder looking machine that I couldn’t find.

Lately many of the 4k UHD discs I buy on Amazon with the black plastic cases have a greasy film on BOTH the inside of the case as well as on the playing side of the disc (due to rubbing against the dirty plastic).
These are brand new discs.

This appears to be MOLD RELEASE agent that is sprayed on the plastic during the manufacturing process so that the plastic doesnt stick to the die in the injection molding machine.

This greasy release agent film is not being cleaned off after the plastic case is removed from the machine, as required.

(BTW Im a quality assurance engineer/manager for various manufacturing companies, but not Bluray/4k case mfg)

This is getting out of hand. Ive had to send back a LOT of 4k UHD discs lately because of this. Ive also bought many disc but didnt open them yet and are now worried because of course its beyond the return window.

BAD QUALITY CONTROL seems to be the root cause here !

I would only send back discs if there is a major problem rendering them unplayable, or the case is pretty destroyed, etc. If I receive a disc and it all looks OK I'll just play it and see. If the case has a residue then I'll clean both the case and the disc before playback. I remove the insert from the case and run it under warm/lukewarm tap water using dish soap to wash off the greasy film. I then use paper towels and a couple of Q-tips to dry off the excess water. I wash the discs GENTLY by hand with a drop or so of dish soap on either side, then dry off with a clean soft cloth (cloth baby diapers work pretty well). NEVER USE ANY KIND OF PAPER PRODUCTS TO WIPE OR DRY OFF YOUR DISCS. I inspect the case to make sure it's dry before replacing the insert and disc (it can be hard to get all the water beneath the clear plastic sheet and the case!).

The grease I’ve come to accept and thankfully it comes off rather easily if you use a microfiber cloth BUT you do need to clean the inside of the case otherwise that greasy crap will just reappear once it’s placed in the hub. You can use a damp cloth for the case but a lens cleaner works pretty well as it absorbs quickly.

The major quality control issue = scratches. I’ve also come across fingerprints as well. Its getting ridiculous at this point. You have to inspect all discs as soon as they come in.

For grease or smudges, breath and a clean 100% cotton or microfiber cloth works great. Anything heavier, maybe using clean hands and something like Dawn dish soap under warm running water and dry with the fabrics mentioned. The same works for eye glasses.

Instead of blowing on it, use a spray bottle with a liquid that one uses to clean your glasses and wipe radially. If that doesn't work, then you may have a problem.
