With node shrinks you get cheaper, cooler, more energy efficient, and faster processors. If they get the cell and RSX running fast enough, they should be able to emulate the PS2 w/o any additional hardware.

Yes... on future consoles. The specs of the PS3 aren't going to change therefore it will always need "some" hardware in order to either soft emulate or hard emulate PS2 games.

I doubt very much they need the cell to run faster in order to emulate PS2 games. Its the fact that the PS2 has like 8000 games and getting even a fraction of those to be software emulated would take a huge amount of programing time.

I dont think the 40gig will ever have Ps2 compatibility, and therefore i doubt they'll kill off the 80gig outright. They'll just change it to a 65nm processor and bump the HDD to 120gb or something.

Did not see it mentioned, the 80gig is not on the BBuy website.

Alas, $100 price cut is too good to be true at this early stage. If there is a imminent price change, it will probably be $349.
Not if the ps3 doesn't start coming out with good games....I love my ps3,
but readily admit that the 360 is way better for multiplayer and thus far has
had way better exclusive games then the ps3...

It's a chicken & egg argument. You need a big install base before you get a great library.

Game makers wern't going PS2 exclusive just for the heck of it, they were doing so because the of the giant base of PS2 owners. Sony needs to get as many PS3's into the hands of consumers as it possibly can. $299 gets them there.

If Sony was willing to drop 4 bills on every console sold at launch, why wouldn't they be willing to drop 2 bills at this point?

It makes no sense whatsoever to sell a "profitable" PS3 while barely keeping up with the XBOX and being humiliated by the Wii. Sony wants this console to be dominant. Third place... or even a strong 2nd... isn't good enough.

Unless Sony is on the verge of going bankrupt, it's a ridiculously easy business decision to drop to $299... and quick.
