Leaning to A series (events continuously change their position vs then not). This production is not exactly like the books, yes they are using the Shadow and Bone fantasy novel as the main basis, yet they have some of the Six of the Crows mixed in. Its a nice amalgamation, makes it more interesting to take in.

The intermixing of Six of Crows with Shadows and Bone does make for the first episode not introduce enough background to get the gist of the storyline as far as I was concerned not having read the books.

I got it about when the darkling first showed himself (episode 2) after then caravan attack to save her. From that point on the series was a lot easier to follow. But the crows have their agenda actually placed in the same time line as this first novel, and the author & producers really liked that in this adaptation. We haven't even seen other more in-depth fantasies really tackled yet. I dare someone to port the The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant series to the screen.

Ya, I’m struggling to get into this after two episodes. It all just feels so...dry.

And it seems like it’s made for people who already know the source material because after 2 episodes I’m still not sure what this universe is all about, how everything works, what their society is like, or what is motivating the various factions or what these factions even are.

And I can’t take that gangster kid who runs the club seriously.

He is a good mastermind, and knows how to misdirects his adversaries. His assassins acquaintances are expert with gun and knives. If he wasn't involved the trajectory of the story would be far simpler.

[Show spoiler]Alina Starkov’s ability to manipulate light means that she is a Sun Summoner, an extremely rare power that doesn’t fit neatly into the existing Grisha hierarchy. (Much like the Darkling, who is technically a Shadow Summoner.)

Since the idea of Sun Summoners was basically the stuff of rumor and legend anyway, many myths grew up around their existence, including a prophecy that basically predicted the Shadow Fold would not fall until a Sun Summoner was born to destroy it. (Shadow and Bone isn’t super clear on this, but the Fold has been around for over 400 years.)

Finished series 1 and I give it a “very, very good” - not quite “great” so not, for example, Game of Thrones level. But close. Same level as the new His Dark Materials.

The actor who plays the main gangster is very good - I thought at first he’d be silly but he won me over - and Jesper and “Logan Delos” (from Westworld) are entertaining too.

But the news that the second season won’t be done until 2022 or 2023 has me considering reading the books instead, because that’s way too freaking long to wait.

Only problem was some of the accents and mumbling force the use of captions.

For me, the series was okay but kept losing me through the episodes. It just felt disjointed to me. I tried looking to see if there may be a home video release in the future but it's not looking very likely. Some websites reviewed the possibility but since it's a Netflix show, it's looking very unlikely. I don't have a subscription, I just watched it through other means but it might be one of those shows I might be willing to buy. It's looking more like a 'Mandalorian' thing where the series is only available through a streaming service. So they can use it as a reason to boost subscriptions.
