Speilberg because he didn't make The Shining.

Honestly I'v never really rated "serious Spielberg" that highly, I spose his 70's work could be argued to be fairly serious but the turn to adult drama and sci fi in the 90's I was never entirely convinced by. I mean the films aren't bad and you can tell he has arguably first rate taste in terms of influences but I don't think he's ever really committed to them, always retained too formulaic an approach that's held him back.

Kubrick by comparison is I think arguably THE director who managed to juggle ambition and entertainment more successfully than anyone.

Is there a poll "Scorsese vs Spielberg" yet??
I'm curious to see how it would go.

I'm a bit surprised by the poll results! Spielberg is legendary, but Kubrick is untouchable. I often wonder how A.I. would've turned out had Kubrick been behind the camera.

Both Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick are the best director... Stanley Kubrick is my favorite director.

Perhaps I could say Kubrick is more historically important on the basis he was a more unique film-maker…but I couldn’t possibly say he has the better body of work. One thing I will say for Kubrick is that Full Metal Jacket is my favourite war film of all-time, & Saving Private Ryan is relegated to runner-up. Overall though it’s Spielberg comfortably.

Spielberg’s work is more accessible & more of most pollsters’ era Id assume. That definitely helps.

Steven Spielberg based on Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan and E.T. alone.
